Splatterhouse Finally Coming Home to Sega Genesis Completing Horror Trilogy

If you are a fan of horror movies and a gamer then you are probably aware of Namco’s classic arcade game, Splatterhouse. It was released on the TurboGrafx-16 back in early 1989 which stands as its only physical home console port, outside of being an unlockable in another game. The team over at Monster Bath Games, seemingly one person according to my research, has announced they are working on a port of Namco’s horror action game for the Sega Genesis.

Finally the Horror Trilogy Will Be Complete

It is interesting that Namco never ported it themselves on the Sega Genesis considering the Sega console was marketed as an arcade at home. Even if it was a special compilation cartridge, or disc for the Sega CD, Namco ignoring the first game is odd. Maybe NEC had an exclusive for home consoles at that time, that is the only reason I can think Namco would not have ported this. The sequel, Splatterhouse 2, would not arrive till well over two years after the TurboGrafx-16 port was released.

Thanks to the Scorpion Engine, a 2D game engine, for the Sega Genesis, we will finally get a home port of Splatterhouse. Even if it is not official, it is still a welcome addition to the console.

According to the limited footage available, no public demo yet, it appears that Monster Bath Games are on the right path with this port.

What to Expect from Splatterhouse

Splatterhouse came out in 1989 in arcades and is very much an arcade game. This era of arcade games was designed to suck quarters out of players pockets. This game does not hold your hand, there is no tutorial, and you are on limited lives and continues. Enemies are cheap and unfair.

Rick, the hockey masked character you control is clumsy, sometimes slow to respond to your button presses, etc.

You will fight a room, literally furniture in a room, and you will probably want to turn the game off. There is a pattern, just like most boss fights in games from this era, learn it and you will breeze through that boss.
