It has been a while without putting on my boots to go hunting, today I decided to take a flight to Mexica lindo y querido to stay at the Rancho del Arroyo Reserve, where wild turkeys abound, I have a long time without shooting and I think it will not be easy to hunt some of these cunning birds, I hope it will be fun and challenging.
The scenery in this area is beautiful, the house where I am staying has a tinge of old beauty. I arrive late at night and decide to take some pictures of the place, I did not want to go hunting at that time and preferred to sleep until 6:00 am. Already rested very early, I go to the gun shop, I choose only three guns for my incursion, a Virant 22 for birds, a Whitlock model 86 for medium prey such as deer, and a Cacciotare 12 shotgun with bullets for birds and medium prey. Even though I'm focused on killing turkeys I carry a medium gun just in case I come across an easy prey of larger size. I also carry my electronic claim maybe I will use it.
This time I am not accompanied by Rasputin, but by Zara, a beautiful dog that is in charge of picking up and bringing back the shot birds, she is my most recent acquisition, I love how fun and playful she is.

Ha pasado un tiempo sin ponerme mis botas para ir de cacería, hoy he decidido tomar un vuelo a Mexica lindo y querido para quedarme en la Reserva Rancho del Arroyo, donde abundan los pavos salvajes, tengo mucho sin disparar y creo que no será fácil cazar algunas de estas astutas aves, espero sea divertido y retador.
El paisaje de esta zona es hermoso, la casa donde me hospedo tiene un tinte de belleza antigua. Llegué muy entrada la noche y decido tomar unas fotos del lugar, no quise adentrarme a la cacería a esa hora y preferí dormir hasta las 6:00am. Ya descansado muy temprano, voy a la armería, elijo solo tres armas para mi incursión, una Virant 22 para aves, una Whitlock model 86 para presas medianas como ciervos, y una escopeta Cacciotare 12 con balas para aves y presas medianas. Aunque voy centrado en matar pavos llevo un arma media por si acaso se me presenta una presa fácil de mayor tamaño. También cargo mi reclamo electrónico tal vez lo utilice.
Esta vez no me acompaña Rasputin, sino Zara, una perra hermosa que se encarga de ir a recoger y traer las aves abatidas, es mi más reciente adquisición, me encanta lo divertida y juguetona que es.

As soon as I get out and walk a few meters I can hear some turkeys in the distance, I hide in some bushes and place my electronic claim with turkey calls, it's been about 5 minutes waiting for one to approach but I don't hear them and I don't see them either, just when I decide to leave the hiding place I see that a couple of turkeys come flying and land a few meters from me, I quickly position myself to shoot but they are faster and run away, even though I make several shots with my shotgun, I couldn't eliminate any of them. I pick up my electronic claim and continue on my way.
Further ahead I found a hunting post, I get on it and wait a few minutes, I hear the warning noises of a white tailed deer, they are a little far, I decide to go down and look for them, they are attentive and their warnings increase, in order not to lose them I crouch down while I observe with my binoculars the area, at last I could see one of them, it is a female, I wait another little bit and behind come more females and a male, I throw myself on the ground waiting for them to come a little closer and to my luck, they just come towards my direction. The females come ahead and that is a problem because they could see me and warn the others, but seeing that the male was already less than 100 meters away I decide to shoot. I was able to hit him but I had my doubts, the animal ran several meters until he fell.

Apenas salir y caminar unos cuantos metros puedo escuchar algunos pavos a la distancia, me escondo en unos arbustos y coloco mi reclamo electrónico con llamados de pavos, han pasado como 5 minutos esperando que se acercara alguno pero no los escucho y tampoco los veo, justo cuando decido salir del escondite veo que vienen un par de pavos volando y aterrizan a pocos metros de mí, rápidamente me posiciono para disparar pero ellos son más rápidos y huyen, a pesar de que les hago varios disparos con mi escopeta, no pude eliminar ninguno. Recojo mi reclamo electrónico y sigo mi camino.
Más adelante encontré un puesto de caza, me subo a él y espero unos minutos, escucho los ruidos de advertencia de un ciervo de cola blanca, estan algo lejos, decido bajar y buscarlos, ellos estan atentos y sus advertencias aumentan, para no perderlos me agacho mientras observo con mis binoculares la zona, al fin pude ver a uno de ellos, es una hembra, espero otro poco y detrás vienen más hembras y un macho, me tiro al suelo esperando que se acerquen un poco más y para mi suerte, justo vienen hacia mi dirección. Las hembras vienen adelante y eso es un problema porque me podrían ver y avisar a los demás, pero al ver que el macho ya estaba a menos de 100 metros decido disparar. Pude darle pero tuve mis dudas, el animal corrió varios metros hasta que cayó.
I claim it and go back to the hunting post, I see that there are several animals drinking water on the shore of the lake, they are very far away, and although I approach up to 200 meters and decide to shoot the highest scoring buck, I could not hit the shot, the rifle I have is not bad, but the sight it uses is a little difficult for me, it does not have much range either, it only marks 150 meters so I must calculate very well the deviation by distance, it is complicated to hit with it at a distance greater than 150 meters, it is a matter of practice.
I continue on my way and I have been walking for a long time, several animals escaped me, among them a Mexican bobcat, some American antelopes and a nest-necked pheasant, this last one is super difficult to hunt, they are small and very fast, I can't distinguish them from the landscape and they detect me at a long distance.

Lo reclamo y regreso al puesto de caza, veo que hay varios tomando agua en la orilla del lago, estan muy lejos, y aunque me acerco hasta 200 metros y decido disparar al macho de mayor puntaje, no pude acertar el disparo, el rifle que tengo no esta mal, pero la mira que usa es un poco difícil para mí, no tiene mucho alcance tampoco, solo marca 150 metros así que debo calcular muy bien el desvío por distancia, esta complicado acertar con él a una distancia mayor a 150 metros, es cuestión de práctica.
Sigo mi camino y ya llevo mucho rato andando, se me escaparon varios animales, entre ellos un lince rojo mexicano, algunos antílopes americanos y un faisán de cuello anidado, este último es súper difícil de cazar, son pequeños y muy rápidos, no los puedo distinguir del paisaje y me detectan a mucha distancia.
The Mexican mountains have a lot of aggressive vegetation, lots of spikes and such, in some areas it is quite thick and the vision is low. After climbing one of them to find a point of interest I find a herd of American antelopes a little more than 200 meters from my location, I don't think I can hit a shot at this distance with the gun I have but I will try. Unfortunately the males are far away and the females are within range of a shot, I will try my luck... I think I hit it.

Las montañas mexicanas tienen mucha vegetación agresiva, muchas púas y cosas así, en algunas zonas es bastante espesa y la visión es baja. Después de subir una de ellas para encontrar un punto de interés me encuentro con una manada de antílopes americanos a poco más de 200 metros de mi ubicación, no creo poder acertar un disparo a esta distancia con el arma que tengo pero lo intentaré. Lamentablemente los machos estan muy lejos y las hembras estan al alcance un disparo, probaré suerte... creo que le di.
With my binoculars I see the direction they take and then follow the trail in case there is blood on the ground, indeed according to the pool of blood I can see that I hit a vital organ, it won't take long to die. After several meters following the trail I hear the warning call of a turkey, it is very close, a little less than 100 meters away.
I stop the search for the antelope and I position my electronic caller making a wild turkey call, I hide in some bushes and wait... I wait and keep waiting for 6 minutes and the turkey doesn't come closer, I think about leaving my hiding place but I'm afraid that the turkey will come closer and when it sees me it will fly away, I'd better wait another 4 minutes. Nothing that approaches, I leave my hiding place to continue looking for the blood trail of the antelope, suddenly I hear the warning call of the turkey about 80 meters away, I quickly hide and I approach the place where the sound comes from slowly using the bushes, I keep using binoculars to try to locate the turkey, and there it is, at last I can see it clearly.

Con mis binoculares veo la dirección que toman para luego seguir el rastro en caso de haber sangre en el suelo, efectivamente según el charco de sangre puede notar que le di en una órgano vital, no tardara mucho en morir. Luego de varios metros siguiendo el rastro escucho el llamado de advertencia de un pavo, esta muy cerca, a poco menos de 100 metros.
Detengo la búsqueda del antílope y posiciono mi reclamos electrónico haciendo llamado de pavo salvaje, me oculto en unos arbustos y espero... espero y sigo esperando por unos largos 6 minutos y el pavo no se acerca, pienso en dejar mi escondite pero temo que justo el pavo se acerque y al verme eleve e el vuelo, mejor espero otros 4 minutos. Nada que se acerca, salgo de mi escondite para continuar buscando el rastro de sangre del antílope, de repente escucho el llamado de advertencia del pavo a unos 80 metros, rápidamente me oculto y me voy acercando al lugar de donde proviene el sonido lentamente valiéndome de los arbustos, no dejo de usar binoculares para intentar ubicar al pavo, y allí esta, al fin puedo verlo con claridad.

I got a silver trophy which is not bad for a female. The bullet punctured her lung and liver, a clean shot.
After claiming the turkey I keep looking for the antelope, she ran several yards from where I shot her, she turned out to be a bronze trophy for being a female, I punctured her left lung. The truth is that this shot was more with the intention of distance practice than a trophy, so not bad.

Tuve suerte que no huyera ya que estaba bastante cerca. Dude entre usar la escopeta o la Virant, pero elegí un disparo con la Virant, presiono el gatillo justo cuando empezó a correr como para impulsarse y volar, imagino que solo escucho un disparo cuando su luz se apagó. He conseguido un trofeo de plata lo cual no esta nada mal para ser una hembra. La bala le perforó un pulmón y el hígado, un tiro limpio.
Luego de reclamar el pavo sigo buscando el antílope, corrió varios metros desde donde le di el disparo, resulto ser un trofeo de bronce por ser una hembra, le perforé el pulmón izquierdo. La verdad es que este disparo fue más con la intención de práctica a distancia que trofeo, así que nada mal.

The intention of this foray was to hunt as many turkeys as possible, but this time I have not been so lucky, I only got one female turkey, the others escaped me, also a coyote escaped me, I think the time without coming hunting affected my skills, I must practice a little more to be a little more efficient again. In my next adventure I will resume my journey through the Mexican lands in Rancho del Arroyo in search of wild turkeys, and maybe I will be able to hunt the difficult nest-necked pheasant.

La intención de esta incursión era cazar la mayor cantidad de pavos posibles, pero esta vez no he tenido tanta suerte, solo he conseguido un pavo hembra, los demás se me escaparon, también un coyote se me escapó, creo que el tiempo sin venir de cacería afectó mis habilidades, debo practicar un poco más para volver a ser un poco más eficiente. En mi próxima aventura retomaré mi travesía por las tierras mexicanas en Rancho del Arroyo en búsqueda de pavos salvajes, y tal vez pueda cazar el difícil faisán de cuello anidado.
