In its pacing and structure, Alan Wake is similar to a television series, with episodes containing plot twists and cliffhangers.

The game consists of six regular episodes and two special episodes. Additionally, there is a six-episode action web series called Bright Falls, which acts as a prequel to the game, and several books that serve to expand the story of Alan Wake.
