holoz0r's A-Z of Steam: Freedom Force - no freedom to be found here

According to my Steam Account history, I purchased Freedom Force 12 years ago, as part of a 2K Games complete pack. I ran the game. It loaded. It didn't have sound. I fiddled with the settings, using software emulation for the sound.

Harrah, sound.

I tried to interact with the game and click my character to do some stuff. My super hero said in a heroic voice "for victory", and promptly ran off the corner of the map, never to be seen again.

I decided to do some research into this to see if it could be addressed. The suggestion was "run the game in 16 bit colour". I did this. The same outcome.

I lowered the resolution. Same outcome. I played in a window. Same outcome.

Freedom Force is an unplayable mess on a modern operating system. Do not buy. Do not engage. The fix listed on the Steam forums is to buy the GoG version.

I'm not doing that.

Freedom Force is an inaccurate simulator of freedom, because I paid for something that I can't even use. From what I experienced by way of the voice acting and the first campaign mission (without the ability to control my character) it doesn't seem that the aesthetic, plot, or gameplay itself would appeal to my sensibilities.

Perhaps I'm jaded. Perhaps I expect things to just work. In any case, I don't expect to have to "buy a game" again to get it to work. I'm going to conclude that I'm missing out on nothing here.

Let's see if the other Freedom Force game in my collection has the same outcome. I'm outrage that I spent money on this thing 12 years ago.
