Analysis of PS4, PC and Xbox One versions. The Switch version is not yet available.

In recent years, horror games come out from under the stones. So much so that it is difficult to keep track of them. From the hand of Wales Interactive Maid of Sker comes now a fairly traditional adventure that is inspired by Welsh legends to offer us an entertaining story with some points for improvement.

Maid of Sker is a horror and infiltration game in the first person that takes some inspiration from the classic Resident Evil to offer us an adventure, in general, well posed, despite the fact that it has certain problems that do not convince us and we will comment more ahead. On a narrative level, it takes us back to 1898, and tells the story of Elisabeth Williams, trapped in a hotel where very strange things are happening, and where the key to everything seems to be a musical recording with powers that we cannot fully understand. Our goal, of course, to get them back and save Elisabeth. It is an interesting premise, and we found it original and entertaining; different from the typical horror story.

This hotel will serve as a witness to our misadventures.

Playable, it's a game focused on exploration and infiltration. As we say, it is inspired by the design of the Capcom saga ; So much so that there are no automatic saving points (in fact, the times that we can save are difficult in limited cases) and the hotel is fully connected, but to access new areas we will have to get keys and objects to unlock it. We have found Wales Interactive to have done a good job in this regard, and it is highly appreciated to have a well-planned scenario in such a game.

Artistically it is a title that knows how to make good use of its strengths.

We also really liked the puzzles. They are relatively simple, and normally the key is to see that small detail that the clue gives us. Instead of the typical "here is a puzzle, here is a clue, find out how to solve it", we come to an area that clearly requires us to do something, and we have to find the element that will guide us. There are some more traditional ones, although in general this more organic proposal has convinced us.

To the controls, it is a very simple title. Enemies, as a general rule, can only hear us. Our protagonist will have to hold his breath when he is close, but if he holds it for too long he will have to catch air quickly (or die), making noise and attracting his attention. Certain elements, such as dust or smoke, will make us cough, so we have to plan our routes with our heads to remain authentic ninjas. This is, we think, where your biggest mistake occurs.

The infiltration has good times, with tools to distract enemies and, in a way, almost mini-puzzles, and other times it's a bit frustrating.

As mentioned, save points are limited, and not abundant. This seems great to us ... if certain areas were better designed. In a Resident Evil, even though save points are not automatic, you usually always have options to escape, but here creatures are faster than you, and a mistake is usually fatal. This translates into sequences that, if you get stuck for some reason, you are going to repeat on many occasions, and depending on where the save point is, you may find yourself repeating the same half hour over and over again.

‘Maid of Sker’ makes good use of lighting.

We like the infiltration approach, holding our breath and finding the least dangerous route through the scenario, but we think it can be quite demanding. We are not going to say that it is a bad thing, we just think that it could have been done differently (give us more tools to run away, for example), and it is up to the player to decide whether he wants this challenge or not. If not, you can always play it easy, although we believe that the difficulty helps to take advantage of (and extend) the four hours it lasts.

Five star hotel.

In the audiovisual, Maid of Sker has been a pleasant surprise. The Xbox One X version, the one we've reviewed, looks great. Both artistically and technically it is at a very good level. Perhaps the enemies are a little generic, but the scenarios have enchanted us, and they are quite varied considering the limitations of the setting. In addition, it performs very well, at 30 stable images per second. As a curiosity, it has a strange latency in the response that has led us to reduce the speed of camera movement, but nothing particularly serious.

Some puzzles are very tastefully designed.

The sound is also great, with a huge number of small sound effects that come from everywhere and keep us in constant tension. We recommend, as usual in the genre, to play with headphones, since unless you have a good sound system it is possible that you will miss part of that enveloping and oppressive experience you are looking for. It comes to us with voices in English and texts in Spanish.

Fire helps us by lighting the way, but the smoke they give off will make us cough.

Demanding terror

Although, to be honest, it is another scary game, the setting, the history, its good production values, the resident-mobile design and its difficulty (optional) have made us enjoy it a lot. It is true that certain moments can be frustrating, that it can punish our mistakes too much and that the infiltration could be more elaborate, but we can argue that all this increases the tension. And if you don't want so much tension, we have difficulty levels to choose from. In general, it is a highly recommended title if you want to be scared and like to hide in the shadows.

Without further ado, I highly recommend playing this fantastic game, if you like horror and entertaining games this is your best! If it was to your liking, I hope for your positive votes and good comments, if you have already played it or are about to do so, I await your responses.

Thanks!
