W H I P - I T (2009)
Realmente no soy muy fan de los coming of age, usualmente suelo encontrarlos bastante sosos y absurdamente estereotípicos, pero Whip It (Dir. Drew Barrymore) es uno realmente bueno y entretenido. Esta cinta se centra en el descubrimiento de la identidad de Ellen Page (Bliss Cavendar), una adolescente de diecisiete años que se encuentra sumida en el aburrimiento y la inconformidad de los concursos de belleza a los que le somete su madre (Marcia Gay Harden) a participar debido a que considera que esto es lo mejor para ella y para su futuro. Y ella, por supuesto, piensa que no es así. Ella necesita algo que le haga feliz. Algo por lo cuál sentir pasión y satisfacción. Y un día, en medio de la compra de unas botas, ve cómo su futura pasión entra rodando en patines a la tienda para dejar unos flyers de una competición de roller derby que se realizaría en unos cuántos días a la que ella, evidentemente, asiste y se queda encantada. Allí ella conocerá a su nuevo equipo, a sus nuevas amigas, a sus nuevas rivales -o nueva, en realidad- y a su verdadera yo. Aunque claro, primero tendrá que lidiar con su madre, mentir sobre su edad para poder entrar al equipo, entre otras muchas cosas más con las que se encontrará allí.
I'm not really a fan of coming of age, I usually find them quite dull and absurdly stereotypical, but Whip It (Dir. Drew Barrymore) is a really good and entertaining one. This film focuses on the discovery of the identity of Ellen Page (Bliss Cavendar), a seventeen year old teenager who finds herself immersed in the boredom and dissatisfaction of the beauty contests her mother (Marcia Gay Harden) submits her to participate in because she considers this to be the best thing for her and her future. And she, of course, thinks it's not. She needs something to make her happy. Something to feel passionate about and satisfied with. And one day, in the middle of buying some boots, she sees her future passion rolling into the shop to drop off some flyers for a roller derby competition that would take place in a few days, which she obviously attends and is delighted about. There she will meet her new team, her new friends, her new rivals -or new one, really- and her true self. Of course, first she will have to deal with her mother, lie about her age in order to get on the team, among many other things she will encounter there.
CRÍA CUERVOS (1976)
Cría Cuervos (Dir. Carlos Saura) es uno de los retratos de la infancia más hermosamente tristes que alguna vez he podido ver. Una niña (Ana Torrent) junto a sus hermanas, es forzada a vivir con su tía (Mónica Randall) luego de que su padre sufre un paro cardíaco en medio de un acto de adulterio.
No sabría definir lo que me hizo sentir esta película al verla. La omnipresente melancolía alrededor de toda la cinta gracias a la tristeza colosal de aquella niña de 8 años, su proceso de adaptación a la orfandad y a la nueva vida que tendrá, su relación con sus hermanas y el cómo éstas perciben el mundo a través de los ojos de la niñez... Es simplemente maravilloso. Simplemente una obra increíble.
Cría Cuervos (Dir. Carlos Saura) is one of the most beautifully sad childhood portraits I have ever seen. A girl (Ana Torrent), along with her sisters, is forced to live with her aunt (Monica Randall) after her father suffers a heart attack in the middle of an act of adultery.
I would not know how to define what this film made me feel when I saw it. The omnipresent melancholy around the whole film thanks to the colossal sadness of that 8 year old girl, her process of adaptation to the orphanage and the new life she will have, her relationship with her sisters and how they perceive the world through the eyes of childhood... It's just wonderful. It's just an amazing piece of work.
ATOMIC BLONDE (2017)
La guerra fría fue uno de los momentos en los que el espionaje se encontró en uno de sus puntos más críticos. Todo el mundo era un espía y todo el mundo era espiado. Atomic Blonde (Dir. David Leitch) se basa en la espía Lorrain Broughton (Charlize Theron) y su terrible estadía en Berlín tiempo antes de la caída del muro de Berlín. Lorrain fue enviada para recuperar una lista importantísima con nombres de agentes encubiertos con los soviéticos e investigar el asesinato de un agente que ella conocía. De las películas de acción más increíbles que he podido ver alguna vez, además de que tiene uno de los plano secuencia más impresionantes que he podido ver con alrededor de 15 minutos de duración, junto a una fotografía y dirección increíbles y un soundtrack exquisito y divertido. It's just amazing.
The Cold War was one of the moments when espionage was at one of its most critical points. Everyone was a spy and everyone was spied on. Atomic Blonde (Dir. David Leitch) is based on the spy Lorrain Broughton (Charlize Theron) and her terrible stay in Berlin long before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lorrain was sent to retrieve a very important list of names of agents undercover with the Soviets and to investigate the murder of an agent she knew. One of the most incredible action movies I've ever seen, plus it has one of the most impressive sequence shots I've ever seen with about 15 minutes of duration, along with incredible photography and direction and an exquisite and fun soundtrack. It's just amazing.
YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (2017)
You Were Never Really Here (Dir. Lynne Ramsay) es increíble. Un veterano traumatizado (Joaquin Phoenix; sí, el que hizo del Joker) por la guerra y por su infancia desdichada se dedica a buscar jóvenes desaparecidas. Uno de sus trabajos se le sale de control y todo termina en una caótica travesía que no podrá olvidar jamás. A pesar de lo trágica de la cinta y lo ominosa que resulta, es increíblemente humana y apacible en algunos momentos, además que tiene una dirección y fotografía impecables.
You Were Never Really Here (Dir. Lynne Ramsay) is amazing. A veteran traumatized (Joaquin Phoenix; yes, the one who played the Joker) by the war and by his miserable childhood is dedicated to look for young missing people. One of his jobs gets out of control and everything ends up in a chaotic journey that he will never forget. As tragic as the film is and as ominous as it is, it is incredibly humane and peaceful at times, and has impeccable direction and photography.
