Cold weather walk

It was freezing outside, even though the day was mainly sunny. The temperature the night before was in the double digits below zero degrees Celsius and continued throughout the day. Everything was still soggy from hours of rain when the abrupt, chilly wave arrived. Any surface that had enough water on it would swiftly develop ice crystals, and there were plenty of those surfaces.

Ice crystals, some the size of several centimeters, covered the whole plant kingdom, from grass on the ground to the tops of tall trees.

From the center, a broad avenue with big trees along both sides goes to the city's western exit. Even in this frigid weather, the street is rather busy. It is almost two kilometers long, or roughly thirty minutes of brisk walking.

If her constant slowing of me would stop, I would move considerably faster. She is moving far faster than usual because of the cold, but still slower than me. We finally synchronized after a few minutes of walking.

It's evident from the people walking past and the clothes they are wearing how cold it is. Sadly, I forgot to pack gloves, so I traveled with my camera in hand and took photos as I walked. It was so cold that I had to frequently warm my fingers inside my jacket pockets during the walk.

There are still some people who rely mostly on bicycles for transportation, even in icy weather. Since we won't be riding the bikes until spring, we packed them a while ago.

We continued walking in the direction of the setting sun, which was signaling the approaching darkness just past the intersection.

It was already dark on the way back, so we picked up the pace to keep warm.
