5-year old crocheter?

Crocheting is an art form that involves a lot of small movements, hence, one's fine motor skills should be developed already before being able to maneuver the tools/materials together. So whenever someone asks me if I teach crochet to preschoolers (since I am a crochet workshop facilitator and a preschool teacher at the same time), I always say no, and that the youngest I could cater in my workshops is 10 y/o.

My 5-year old nice is a crafter and an art-lover like me. She would always go to my room and request that we do/make something. And since she sees me crocheting a lot of times, there were also multiple moments when she would ask me to teach her how to crochet.

I am always hesitant because I was pretty sure her small hands wouldn't be able to control the hook nor hold the yarn well yet. There was once though when I decided to do it with her. I was the one holding the yarn while she did the movements of the hook to make CHs. That was her first crocheting experience.

And then, just recently, a surprising thing happened.

Just like the previous times, she once again asked me to teach her how to crochet. I was occupied with a project that time, so to get her busy and off my face, I gave her a spare hook and yarn. I positioned the yarn in her hand and reintroduced the movement of the hook.

The first few CHs, I was guiding her hands, but later on, I let her do it herself.

And to my surprise, she was able to do it !!!!

She just needed verbal reminders where to position the hook or to move her fingers that are holding the yarn, but man, she was able to do it all by herself... with her small hands!!!

She got very occupied with it for several minutes, that when her sister called her for dinner, she responded with, "Wait lang!" Hahaha I mean, look at that game face on.

Her CHs aren't perfect, but they are very special. What made me happier is that she seemed so pleased and proud of herself! We turned her first project into a necklace! hihi

Lesson learned: Never underestimate the capabilities of children. ❤️

Stay sane and safe!
Let's spread happiness.
