Designing for School Fashion Week "The 'Blue Me Away" Dress

Hello wonderful creators on Hive, I hope you all are having a great week going, so far it's been a busy one for me, a good busy though, if there is anything like that, as I've spent the last three days making simple yet beautiful dresses for a friend as a show of support to her, she got selected by her course mates. To represent her department in their school fashion week, more like
a pageantry they do for fun once every school session.

During my time in school, I remember always saying no to such roles, even when everyone wanted me to because I was very shy then and felt less confident about what outfit I should be wearing which I regret so much today, missing out on all the fun and also letting down friends that looked up to me to help my department win.

So when Deborah told me about hers, also wanting to turn down the offer for reasons similar to mine, I wasn't having and encouraged her to be a part, as many positive benefits come from being a face and role model to others, as for her outfits, I told her not to worry because I got her covered.

One of the dresses I got inspired by her to make is what we call the "blue me away dress" an asymmetric neckline dress with side ruffles in bold royal blue color, it's easy for a designer to sketch or come up with a design but for someone who has no idea how dresses are made but knows what she wants, I was impressed as she tried to explain to me, bringing the dress to reality, it brought the exact reaction I needed from her, it "blue" her away 😅 and I hope it does same at the upcoming event.

Making Process

  • I started by drafting the upper part of the dress, cutting out the shape of the asymmetric neckline to match the back, I also cut out a keyhole on the full armhole area.

  • Next, I cut out the facing for both front and back, which I used in turning the neckline

  • A straight skirt pattern was used to cut the base of the dress

  • After Which I joined both the upper and lower front by the waist and also repeated the same for the back, adding a zipper too

  • The side ruffles were cut on a fold of 4 inches, I doubled the length I would be attaching it to to get its length, then gathered both before joining to the sides

And here is the final look, she looked very chic and elegant adorned in her "blue me away" dress, the good thing is she can still wear this dress even after the pageant as it also fits as a dinner dress as well, and I'm so happy to have another chance to participate in my own best way, what I missed out on during my time, I was given a second chance, and it even feels even much better now, I hope Deborah wins this one, wish us luck.
