THE GATEWAY FISH … PUFFERS

While fishing in sunny Florida, it was not long after my bait hit the water that I pulled in my first fish of the day. I grew up with three brothers, who taught me how to fish when I was young. By the age of seven I was baiting my own hook and taking the fish off of the hook.
I have reeled in bass, perch, pickerel, sunfish, catfish, and even Cutthroat Trout out of the Shoshone River in Cody Wyoming.
These are all fresh water fish.

I have only fished in saltwater a few times and never had much luck, but when I landed this strange looking guy I knew what it was.

The pufferfish gave me quite a fight as he tripled in size. It puffs up as a defensive maneuver.

Remember I told you that I take the fish I catch off of the hook, but not this one.

@thebigsweed was called into duty, as I was not going anywhere near this prehistoric monster! After my hubby finally got the puffer off of the hook and back in the water, we were not sure it was going to make it. After floating upside down for over a minute, it swam away and we were happy.

It was time for an adult beverage and a little puffing up of our own. 😎

The following day, I landed another pufferfish.

With a little investigating, I came across some interesting facts about the pufferfish.
There are lots of different species of pufferfish, many of which are poisonous.
The one I landed is a northern pufferfish, they are not poisonous.

The northern puffer is considered very good eating.
During WWII, the puffer was grown commercially to supplement the soldiers' diet with a good source of proteins. The processed puffer was sent overseas to augment the dwindling supply of beef.

By the way, I used frozen shrimp for bait, with a two hook set up. Now I want to switch over to a spinner to see what else I can attract. I enjoy the reeling in and casting out, a little jigging here and there, it's relaxing .
