Consistency is the mother of all virtues

Consistency is the mother of all virtues

Hello friends of this community, Consistency implies carrying out an activity for a long period of time in order to obtain results, for example, I want to be consistent in my diet to achieve my goals or I also look for consistency in the gym to develop muscle or in my studies to pass university exams or in my professional projects.

In short, it is about being constant in life, doing activities for a long time and remembering to do them regularly. From my point of view, what I see in myself that makes consistency difficult is neither a lack of will nor focus but more Well a lack of motivation, we all want to have a fit body here, make money, achieve our goals, so it is not a question of lacking desire.

I think the problem is that we are not used to it, a bit spoiled I would say, I see that what makes it most difficult for me to be constant is my constant search for different things that give me pleasure on social networks, it is extremely easy to fall into this pattern for example I go to Instagram and start researching someone's life, then I switch to YouTube, I watch 5 minutes of a video and if I don't like it, I move on to the next one.

The point is that constant search for small stimuli, whether in the form of short videos or notifications, because these provoke reactions in you and this happens every day, you are in line at the supermarket and you think "Oh, how boring, so you pick up your cell phone." ” to watch a video and you entertain yourself, you check WhatsApp to see if there are notifications or you are on a taxi trip that will last 15 minutes and you take your phone to see if there is something that excites you more and takes you out of boredom.

So I think that's where the problem lies and I realized that I was constantly looking for these little quick stimuli, these novelties to combat boredom, so I think that the biggest obstacle to consistency is our lack of resistance to boredom, we are not able to do something that does not excite us, when we had to study at first the study seemed something exciting, something new at the beginning of the year, you know, but over time when doing it every day it becomes monotonous, because everything in life tends to become monotonous .

In economics there is an idea that the more access a person has to a product, the less desire they have for that product, that is, if I want a chocolate bar very much, my satisfaction when eating the first bar is much greater than when eating The second or even the third, my pleasure decreases as I have more access to something that I previously wanted so much and was scarce.

I hope that this is understood, because nowadays we want everything and thanks to the Internet, searching for these new things that eliminate boredom has become easy, so as a result our resistance to boredom decreases more and more, so the same thing happens with food, for example. For example, if someone is used to very stimulating foods such as fast food, and when they drink unsweetened tea it tastes unpalatable, they panic, they think “My God, how boring, there is nothing that hyper-stimulates my palate.”

So I would say that consistency requires that you develop this resistance to boredom and to keep doing things even if they don't seem the most exciting in the world and I would say that this ability to resist boredom is something that we can actually train, for example (this is an extreme case), you can go to a cabin for a month, without a cell phone, without any distractions and gradually you will adapt to that new situation in your life and you will strengthen the ability to resist boredom until it becomes something of a habit, something solid.

Then little by little you will manage to have a strong resistance to boredom and you will be able to endure long periods of boredom, so it is necessary to train, but the problem is that we must go through that struggle of resistance, how can I go through that struggle, let's put it like this, doing planks in the gym, suffering suffering, while holding the position, that is the challenge, that is, to enjoy the advantages of The positive part you must go through the difficult part that is very difficult, but if you choose not to face that difficulty you will not strengthen your ability to resist boredom.

And then there is the other side of the coin, and that is that you will also never be able to experience the benefits of being someone constant, of being someone capable of effectively managing boredom, understand that it is as if you have to face two complicated challenges according to the first challenge. It is the training itself, whether when you are waiting for the elevator or when you are in line at the bakery or you are in the Uber or in the morning in the bathroom, it will be difficult, you will have to challenge yourself to put aside your cell phone and concentrate 100% in the task you are doing.

Sometimes while you study or work or write, you read, it will be difficult to stay focused at first without feeling the temptation to look for something to get you out of boredom, it will be difficult, however, the second challenge would be to live a life in which You cannot maintain consistency in any area and that is also complicated, imagine how sad it would be to have several dreams and not be able to enjoy any of them, simply because you do not know how to handle boredom.

So both paths present difficulties, that is what I am trying to say, I think in the end it is up to you to decide which of them you want to go, at the end of the day I would say that the first path is better, although these words may be They may be carried by the wind, but dreams are worth fulfilling.
