Thirtyfor30: You are dispensable!

I'm turning thirty in 30 days. I have a long list of things I want to do before I turn a year older including bungee jumping, skydiving, running a marathon, and scuba diving to name a few. Still, with my recent surgery, I'm compelled to think outside of the box. Finally, I decided to start a personal project to share thirty (30) valuable life lessons and mantras I learned and lived by; one lesson a day until my birthday. That means I gotta pen something every single day here in Hive, quite a challenge for me indeed! šŸ˜†

You might think I'm savage, rude, and worst, bitter in life to share a truth most people fear to face head-on. I am not! I've grown wiser over the years and I wouldn't unlearn this lesson even if given the chance. When I realized that I was not irreplaceable, my life changed for the better.

I used to live every day feeling the slightest fulfillment because people looked for me, people asked for my help, and some things at work wouldn't be finished if I were not around. When the pandemic hit the Philippines in Q2 of 2020, my mother gave an ultimatum: Go home! My company didn't offer a WFH arrangement then so I had to decide which ultimatum was more important. "Find someone in the office who'll do your job in the meantime," my boss's words were cutthroat. "I was the only one doing my job (forecasting) for years. How could I teach my job to someone in a matter of hours?", I thought at the back of my mind.

For the first time, I didn't feel important and much to my surprise, I was relieved. I spent an apocalyptic couple of weeks at home not worrying about work. This incident taught me that not checking my phone after office hours wouldn't do any life-threatening harm, spending uninterrupted quality time with my family wouldn't kill the business, and saying no to meetings held on weekends made me a better person. I set healthy and clear boundaries since then.

The next time you think you're too important, think again. There will always be someone better, smarter, more talented, more hardworking than you already are. In the grand scheme of things, we don't matter; you and I? We're passers-by. The world will go on with or without us in it. The earlier you accept this, the happier, and more peaceful your life will become.

That's all for today. I hope you come back tomorrow and in the next 28 days! šŸ„°
