Thirtyfor30: Kindness is free

Years have passed, but a particular memory is still as clear as the summer sky. It was a rough day at work and everything else spiraled down right before my eyes. The only thing I wanted was the gentle embrace my little bed gave but it was past 10 in the evening and only a few jeepneys were plying to my then-home, Lapu-Lapu City.

Back then I used to post anything and everything on my socials and that night was no exception. Tho subtly, I posted how mentally and emotionally unstable I was. I was not suicidal or something; I was just weary and perhaps needed someone to talk to. I remember sitting on the street gutter when I found a random person's "Hey, okay ka lang?"; a message that later reminds me how simple it is to show kindness. He wasn't a friend; I saw him once or twice on campus because he was the ex-boyfriend of a distant friend. To make it clear, he didn't hit on me or something. 😂

May this serve as a reminder that in a world of relentless resentment, gossip, envy, and pride among other unruly human behavior, kindness (even from strangers) can make an impact. He didn't solve my problem that night, but he was there to listen without judging, a sponge absorbing all the negativity I created and giving me hope that tomorrow was going to be a better day.

Kindness is free but why are we giving it less and less these days? We ought to rethink why.
