Kids Hauling Coconuts For $0.47

“Someone else is happy with less than what you have.”

Locals call it hakot in english its short for hauling. After a harvest these kids carry out sacks of coconut and are paid according to the amount of kilos carried and distance walked. To give you an idea the kid in yellow carried 44 pounds at a distance of about 1/2 mile his payment for that is exactly 47 cents or 20 pesos. That buys about a half kilo of rice.

I am sure there are some kids who are pressured into doing this for the family but many of the kids look forward to the chance to make some pesos to buy candy or snacks.

I took all these pictures using my personal cell phone... enjoy!

Here you can see the kids looking closely as my wife weighs the sacks to determine the kids pay.
