Wolfpack: From a Spark to a Flame - Personal Opinion

Source

I decided to give a try to this Tv Series since I think we have enough zombie / infected for now, Wolfpack as the title says its a Tv Series about four kids who get bitten by a werewolf, two of them were bitten during a fire, they were on their way to school when suddenly they get trap in the middle of the fire, wild animals come out of the woods some of them even on fire and star running against the cars that were park on the way so everybody star running away and here is where Everett Lang and Blake Navarro get bitten by the creature who came out of the woods, the werewolf. This Tv Series is the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar to a Tv Series monster theme, I think it was a good marketing move to get her onto this show although I wonder if this is all a marketing scheme, I'm writing this article as I see the first episode, eventually will rewatch it. After looking around online I found that this story is supposed to be the adaptation of Wolfpack, a book by Edo Van Belkom.

As mention the story starts with kids trap on the road surrounded by a fire and wild animals who are desperate and start running towards them, everybody start getting out of their cars and running away from the animals but with all the cars blocking their escape it's obvious that animals will get to them very fast, animals are just scared, most likely their intentions were not to kill anyone but if you get in their way will run you over.

Suddenly while Everett was looking in the direction of the fire a bighorn ram appears, it has part of his body on fire and its horn, also seems like it was attacked by a wild animal, on many movies and series this type of animals most of the time represent something magical, remember this is a fantasy horror show. All the teenagers that were inside the school bus go out, some of them get killed, Everett gets bitten by something and almost get hit by a car but he was saved Blake, here the see at each other and made their first connection finding out that they were both bitten by the same animal, the werewolf.

Both of the so far main characters escape the fire, seems like Everett was the one hurt the worst from the two and goes to the hospital, ER is full but a nurse takes care of him, they put him on observation and past out, suddenly gets a call from someone telling him to get out of the hospital because he is coming, the werewolf is coming to get him.

Here at the hospital is where we see most of those terrible special effects, if you ever so Van Helsing the movie, the werewolf is very similar and that's fine but other effects like their wounds glowing red it was really bad, but there were other effects like the Bighorn Ram laying on the bed looking at him was ok. It looks like the budget of this series is not too high that they didn't invest in A+ special effects and sometimes its fine as long as the characters perform well, the story is ok, all the characters have their own story at least the ones we know the most about are Everett and Blake.

Source

Blake a teenager who suffers from panic attacks and takes therapy to control it with two overprotective parents while Blake seems to be the girl whose parents are separated and his fathers drinks, having a brother who has autism and she is the one who look after him, she has a more defined personality I guess its because the bad rebel girl attitude might be more common at her age, she has no laptop no cellphone no tech with her.

The other two main characters are Luna and Harlan, they both brothers, Luna pick up Harlan from the club and they start going toward the rest of the fire, here we discover that they were born werewolf and were abandon by their father during a fire just like the one happen, very similar to other werewolf stories at some point the transformation is permanent and they lose control. Both Luna and Harlan back then were found by a ranger who became their father and probably is the only one that knows their secret, Luna was worried about Garrett who is still inside the fire.

Source

Garrett records a message worried that he won't get out of the fire, he is currently trap inside, a message to Luna and Harlan telling them stories when they were small kids, remembering the good and bad times they had together, eventually telling them that he loves them.

Blake and Everett run away from the werewolf until they get to a bridge and stop, Blake was having a panic attack and for the first time they start bonding, Everett teach her a few breathing technique to calm down, they go their own ways even after Everett told her they had to stay together. I know I haven't talked about Kristin Ramsey (Sarah Michelle Gellar) but in this episode she had very little to do, she is investigating the case and also knows about either the werewolf or the student who started the fire. Suddenly all four Luna, Harlan, Blake and Everett hear a wolf, their eyes roll backwards and they start running into the forest until they find each other at a rock where they can see the clear moon and their eyes start glowing yellow, Luna and Harlan have an idea of what's happening but they are not 100% sure, they tell Blake and Everett "You're like us now" , the four of them are now on the same page, Werewolves.

I can't say it was terrible, I actually watch it twice while I was getting my ideas together, special effects were not the best, have seen worst but since Luna and Harlan appear in front of the fire talking about their father those scenes were good enough to trap you into the story, I look up the author of the book and the review, the book has ok reviews online it all depends on the adaptation of the story to the tv show. Regarding the actors and characters, in my opinion none of them were terrible, it's a teenager tv show you have to be clear on that so don't expect a Pedro Pascal, I would give it a 6 out of 10 as for the first episode.
