Leave The World Behind

Name - Leave The World Behind
Released - 2023
Creators - Sam Esmail

I caught the trailer to Leave The World Behind on Netflix and decided to start watching it as the title had me intrigued and dystopian films are all the rage for some reason right now.. probably nothing.

The last time I heard this phrase was 15 years ago with great vibes by Axwell in Miami. People were high off life and partying and now we seem to be moving towards the world as we know it is ending.

This film has The Net vibes but without the good looking (back then) Sandra Bullock to make it worth watching. The film is about an attack on the US that could spoiler alert cause a civil war.

Whilst we are all chomping popcorn awaiting the fake alien invasion, it seems the narrative is moving towards another civil war in the US. How this is portrayed in this film is quite ridiculous though, along with much of the acting.

It starts heavyweights such as Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke. They are both awful and have a terrible on screen presence. Julia Roberts is like some sort of Bridget Jones character and Ethan seems to just wonder around muttering to himself. I wonder if he was drunk, high or both on set.

The start of the attack is signaled by losing TV and wifi. Things people dont pay much attention to, but in the film it means people will need to have a war with each other. It gets scarier when a funny emergency signal is broadcast on the tv. It gets really farcical when many Tesla cars are remote control driven to drive and be dangerous.

The only acting that was quite enjoyable to watch was by Mahershala Ali, but the role was just too limiting for him to really shine. I hope I can catch him in something much better.

In the end it leads nowhere and you just want it to end as soon as possible. There are better hopes that we may see something better from the much awaited Civil War from Alex Garland. I have read some of his books and enjoyed them, so hopefully he can bring something out of the bag.

Along with The Handmaid's Tale, it seems civil war in the US is becoming a popular topic for the media and an extension of trying to divide people like they do in the election currently playing.

You can skip this one though, and hopefully Julia will stop acting and give us all a break.

Thanks for reading.
