A few weeks ago, my family visited me in Chiang Mai. My cousin was eager to find a place for mala hotpot, a trend that has gained popularity in Thailand over the past few years. There are various options, such as mala sticks (more like veggies or meat sticks coated with Mala chili powder), mala hot soup, and mala hotpot, where you choose a selection of items to immerse in the mala soup. This time, we tried a different type of mala featuring a grill surrounded by mala soup. It's an à la carte experience, allowing you to pick dishes and ingredients directly from the fridge. Each tray, color-coded by price, offers a range of options, with vegetables being cheaper and beef being the most expensive.
After selecting your items, you can return to your table to grill or add them to the soup. It's a fun and interactive dining experience, perfect for family or friends. I chose this particular restaurant because it's conveniently located across from my favorite grilled meat place, though it was my first time trying it. I hoped it would be good, and it certainly was. The quality and freshness of the meat and other ingredients were impressive. I loved the dual cooking options – grilling and soup – and the unique table setup, which featured a lower table with camping chairs. While not the most comfortable for my tall, farang boyfriend 'Kevin', he managed just fine.
Overall, I really liked this place. The pricing was reasonable, usually not exceeding 3xx baht per person. I also realized I prefer à la carte dining over buffets, as it prevents me from overeating. This was a delightful experience, and I will definitely return.
