I love corn, its beautiful and tasty, one of the reasons i was so excited to visit central america again. Coming to Belize was a truly special time as i had a chance to meet some maya people growing naturally and abundantly within the forest. Sharing with nature and co creating a garden full of friuts, medicines and staple crops.
During my visit there a met a maya healer and forest gardener with a wealth of knowledge, he was growing many things and sometimes i would buy some foods from him. One day he gave me these young corns and told me to boil them with the skin and hairs on. He told me to drink the warm tea and that its very good for you.
it was the first Id heard about drinking corn tea but I love all sorts of herbal teas so I was excited to try this one, I boiled the corn until it was tender and the water had a golden color.
I drank the tea and was more than pleasantly surprised. It was sweet and a bit malt like, it had that earthly depth and comforting feeling. It would be wonderful on a cold day, gosh im dreaming of one now :)
Of course I ate the corns after and had a very delicious meal indeed. Beans, avocados, these are amongst some of my most favourite foods!
I left some of the skins and hairs to use to boil up again for another tea and altho not as strong it was still delicious. I was impressed to find out that corn tea is especially good if you have a UTI since it aids hydration and passing of fluid and for that reason it may not be good to drink it if you have sweated alot and lost electrolyties. However i didnt really experience this, even though i was sweating from the hot chillies and humid enviornment but it might of been different if i had been doing intense exercise.
Corn tea also provides vitamin c, it contains stigmasterol and sitosterol, which are highly effective in preventing heart disease and high cholesterol. It also reduces your blood sugar level due to the plant acids that also help in improving oral and skin conditions.
Let me know what you think? have you ever had a corn silk tea, would you liketo try one?
