One of the places, not only the most central, but also the most popular and therefore, the most frequented in Madrid, is located in the very heart of that magisterium of legendary charm, which, as a whole, is undoubtedly the so-called Barrio de las Letras: the Plaza de Santa Ana.
The Plaza de Santa Ana – or ‘of the Mother of the Mother’, as you will understand – is the invaluable heart where all those arteries flow into the form of alleys, which, even after centuries, continue to preserve the old mansions that once housed the joys and frustrations of a large number of characters, especially of an artistic nature, who, sheltered in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Madrid, left an indelible mark on the pages of History, also offering refuge and expansion to the different generations and cultural currents that preceded them.
It is not surprising, therefore, that part of its greatest attraction lies in the complex and numerous offer of restaurants - most of them period and therefore historic - as well as seductive terraces, which, perpetuating themselves over time, continue to make good part of that old poem by Luis de Góngora, which says: 'Let me be warm and let the people laugh'.
Uno de los lugares, no sólo más céntricos, sino también más populares y por lo tanto, frecuentados de Madrid, lo tenemos en pleno corazón de ese magisterio de legendario encanto, que, en su conjunto, no cabe ninguna duda que es el denominado Barrio de las Letras: la Plaza de Santa Ana.
La Plaza de Santa Ana – o ‘de la Madre de la Madre’, entienda el que quiera- es el corazón inestimable al que van a desembocar todas esas arterias en forma de callejas, que, todavía, al cabo de lo siglos, continúan conservando las viejas casonas que un día albergaron las alegrías y las frustraciones de un gran número de personajes, sobre todo, de índole artística, que al abrigo de una de las barriadas más antiguas de Madrid, dejaron una huella imborrable en las páginas de la Historia, ofreciendo, también, refugio y expansión a las diferentes generaciones y corrientes culturales a las que precedieron.
No es de extrañar, por tanto, que parte de su mayor atractivo resida en la compleja y numerosa oferta de locales de restauración -la mayoría de época y por lo tanto, históricos- así como de seductoras terrazas, que, perpetuándose en el tiempo, continúan haciendo bueno parte de aquel viejo poema de Luis de Góngora, que dice: ‘ande yo caliente y ríase la gente’.
