Time, inexorably, continues on its way and although we still have the feeling that it does not force its march, the truth is that we are sensing the opening of that symbolic door, represented in ancient Rome by the two-headed god Janus and that in Christianity would be related to the evangelical figure of the second John: that of the Winter Solstice.
Perhaps for this reason, one of the most magical places in Madrid comes to mind, located at the confluence of Arenal Street and the San Ginés Passageway, whose two corners are delimited by two great cultural landmarks of that Madrid of yesteryear: the oldest bookstore and what was one of the most cutting-edge party venues of the so-called ‘Madrid Scene, whose name still continues to respond to that of Joy Eslava.
And of course, in the middle of the Pasadizo, that metaphorical oasis where the most exquisite chocolate with churros in Madrid is still served, a place, by the way, that still remembers the famous discussions of two great geniuses of Spanish Literature, Benito Pérez Galdós and Ramón María del Valle Inclán, and where all the bohemians of the night end up, to comfort their wounded stomachs with the crowing of the rooster in the early morning: the Chocolate Shop of San Ginés.
El tiempo, inexorable, continúa su camino y aunque todavía tengamos la sensación de que no fuerza la marcha, lo cierto es que vamos presintiendo la apertura de esa simbólica puerta, representada en la antigua Roma por el dios bicéfalo Jano y que en el Cristianismo estaría relacionada con la evangélica figura del segundo Juan: la del Solsticio de Invierno.
Quizás por ello, me viene a la memoria uno de los lugares más mágicos de Madrid, situado en la confluencia de la calle Arenal y el Pasadizo de San Ginés, cuyas dos esquinas están delimitadas por dos grandes hitos culturales de aquel Madrid de antaño: la librería más antigua y la que fuera una de las más punteras salas de fiestas de la denominada ‘Movida Madrileña’, cuyo nombre todavía continúa respondiendo al de Joy Eslava.
Y por supuesto, a mitad del Pasadizo, ese metafórico oasis donde todavía se continúa sirviendo el chocolate con churros más exquisito de Madrid, lugar, por cierto, que todavía recuerda las célebres discusiones de dos grandes genios de la Literatura española, como fueron Benito Pérez Galdós y Ramón María del Valle Inclán y donde terminan recalando todos los bohemios de la noche, para reconfortar sus malheridos estómagos con el canto del gallo en la madrugada: la Chocolatería de San Ginés.
