End of summer delicatessen

This is one of these treats end of summer has to offer and personally, after cooling down in the fridge, a big favorite.

growing up, I remember this neighbor we had who was deaf and dumb. it was literally imposible to understand what he was trying to express, but he always showed up in this time of year with a bucket full of prickly pears for us.
he connected a drinking can he opened with a can opener on one end to a long wooden stick and this is how he would pick them.
he was a lonely man, living on a neglected piece of land that was wildly over grown. in reality, it was a paradise offering all the good the earth has to offer. figs, oranges, carobs, the prickly pears and much more.

my father would leave the bucket full of water for a while to soften and separate the tiny thorns that this fruit is so much avoided for.
and then, with masterful hands peel them and place them in the fridge to cool.

a neighbor of mine has a plant that gets bigger every year and is just near the stone wall between our farms.
I am the only person around picking and eating these delicious fruits and over time, it has become a part of who I am, going back to my remote childhood.

My dad saw a photo I sent and asked me to send him some..
and a friend said I should be careful as eating these have the fame of causing constipation.
I responded with a photo:
