What on earth? I have only seen cormorants at the beach, but this guy was in a garden.
It was a huge surprise that I had to investigate, as what on earth would a sea bird do in a garden, especially a "Cape Cormorant" (Phalacrocorax capensis)
Even more befuddling was the fact that I saw him here on a previous day, so come and join me in the investigation.
Impossible? A bird with webbed feet for swimming, sitting high up in an oak tree? This was the first day when I saw him.
Cool calm and collected was this guy as he rested in the shade.
But here was the first piece of the puzzle. He sat in the yellow circle near the water trench.
So maybe he bathed there and then dried himself?
But why not in the sea?
Still didn't make sense as the sea is much bigger than this little pond?
Here was the answer. Food!
Frogs in abundance and so much easier to catch them than fast fish in the sea.
At least for this season the cormorant doesn't have to work for food again. A casual stroll to the water and a quick one or two or six mouthfuls of frogs and his day is made.
They told me that he sleeps in the oak tree at night.
What a life.
So yeah, we continue to learn about the inventiveness of mother nature's residents and it is simply amazing how intelligent they all are.
But wait, before you go, here's something else!
Some of you may remember this water lily flower that I have posted recently in #amazingnature?
All of the flowers leaves have fallen off subsequently and tomorrow I will show you a territorial battle photo between two dragonflies on the old flower below this one in #amazingnature
And that's All Friends!
Note: As usual all photos are my own and taken with a Canon Powershot SX60HS Bridge camera.
