SMAP Contest Round 113: Brooding is da sh!t

Every week @nelinoeva hosts a fun contest in the Feathered Friends Community. This week's theme is free as a bird.

That means I can post shit that makes me happy.
You see this big, pink crow butthole???
It makes me happy.

You wanna know why?

I'll tell you why.
That's more than a butthole, that's a brood patch.

What's a brood patch and why is it so special?

A brood patch is an area --ahem-- between the lady crow's legs 😳 that loses feathers during nesting season so that when she sits on the eggs she can transfer her body heat to them and keep all the little crows-to-be warm and growing until they hatch. (Other birds have this, too, but I only look up the skirts of crows.)

A brood patch only starts showing like this when the mamas are actually brooding, in other words, sitting on eggs. I promise you, a crow's butthole doesn't usually look so... mamalian.

Long story short, this lovely pink crow butthole brood patch means that Mama Tax is sitting on eggs, and soon there will be baby crows.

Baby crows!

Mama Tax has to do a lot of sitting. A looooooooooot of sitting. For hours at a time.

This next photo should give you an idea of just how long she has to sit on those eggs, holding still and holding it all in.

That stream lasted almost a full second.
Glad to see she's staying hydrated.
