Treasure in the backyard (Engl / Spn)

Greetings to all, I hope you are having a good weekend, with health and harmony. In my blog I talk very frequently about my backyard, and the animal and plant life that abounds there, and this little piece of forest is a space full of nature and with a great variety of species. Also, in previous posts, I have talked about the land tortoises or “morrocoyes” as we call them in my country, which are born in this area of my home; and for today, I will share with you the last little turtle that I found this week, almost ending the birth season of these animals, which runs from May to July of each year.

Saludos a todos, espero que estén pasando un buen fin de semana, con salud y armonía. En mi blog hablo con mucha frecuencia de mi solar y de la vida animal y vegetal que abunda allí, y es que este pedacito de bosque es un espacio pleno de naturaleza y con gran variedad de especies. También, en posts anteriores, les he hablado de las tortugas de tierra o “morrocoyes” como les decimos en mi país, que nacen en esta área de mi hogar; y para hoy, les compartiré la última tortuguita que encontré esta semana, ya casi finalizando la temporada de nacimiento de estos animales, que va de mayo a julio de cada año.

The scientific names of these animals are Chelonoidis carbonaria for red-footed tortoises; and Chelonoidis denticulata, for those with yellow legs. There are few anatomical differences between both species, except for the shell, which is lighter in yellow-legged turtles and darker in red-legged turtles, and obviously, the scales on the legs, which vary in color according to the species. These two types of turtle live on my backyard, and reproduce every year. There are years in which opossums, and perhaps some rodents, consume the eggs, (which are buried in the ground by the mothers when laying them), or eat the newborn or juvenile specimens. This was the year 2022, however, in 2023 and 2024 I have been able to find a large number of baby turtles. According to my calculations, this year I have been able to collect around 40 specimens of different ages, sizes and species. I have given many of them to responsible people, since I am not selling them, and others are still in my house, in a kind of nursery that I set up until they are older.

Los nombres científicos de estos animales son Chelonoidis carbonaria para las tortugas de patas rojas; y Chelonoidis denticulata, para las de patas amarillas. Entre ambas especies hay pocas diferencias anatómicas, salvo el caparazón que es más claro en las tortugas de patas amarillas y más oscuro en las de patas rojas, y obviamente, las escamas de las patas que varían de color de acuerdo a la especie. Estos dos tipos de tortuga conviven en mi solar, y se reproducen cada año. Hay años en que las zarigüeyas, y quizás algún roedor, consumen los huevos, (que son enterrados en el suelo por las madres al ovipositarlos), o comen los ejemplares recién nacidos o juveniles. Así fue el año 2022, sin embargo, en el 2023 y 2024 he podido encontrar gran cantidad de tortuguillos. Según mis cálculos este año he podido recolectar alrededor de 40 ejemplares de diferentes edades, tamaño y especies. Muchos los he obsequiado a personas responsables, pues no los vendo, y otros están aún en mi casa, en una especie de guardería que habilito hasta que están más grandes.

I found this specimen hidden under some branches near the large acerola, when I was searching for mushrooms. It is a young specimen, perhaps two or three months old. I saw it hidden there, and I wanted to see it in more detail, so I picked it up, although later I returned it to its same place, because the "nursery" is full, and I think that with the abundance of water and vegetation that there is currently, it may be well in the backyard, for now it is not in danger due to the availability of food for other species.

Este ejemplar lo encontré oculto debajo de unas ramas cerca de la acerola grande, cuando yo estaba en búsqueda de setas. Es un ejemplar joven, quizás tenga dos o tres meses de edad. Lo ví allí oculto, y quise verlo con más detalle, así que lo levanté, aunque después lo volví a su mismo lugar, pues la “guardería” está llena, y creo que con la abundancia de agua y vegetación que actualmente hay, puede estar bien en el solar, por ahora no corre peligro por la disponibilidad de alimento para otras especies.

When I picked her up, she stayed very still, she was calm, but she picked up her paws, which is a reflex action to protect herself. Turning it around I could see that it is a small female. I know this because her abdomen is flat, not concave as is the case with males. I also noticed that it is a red-legged specimen, in this photo you can see some of the small scales of that color.

Al levantarlo se quedó muy quieta, estaba tranquila, pero recogió las patas, lo cual es un acto reflejo para protegerse. Al girarla pude ver que es una pequeña hembra. Esto lo sé porque su abdomen es plano, no cóncavo como ocurre con los machos. También noté que es un ejemplar de patas rojas, en esta foto puedes ver algunas de las pequeñas escamas de ese color.

After verifying that the little turtle was okay, that it had no bites on its shell or legs, that its eyes were healthy, I proceeded to return it to the same place, thanking nature for these little treasures that I can find in my backyard.

Luego de verificar que la tortuguita estuviese bien, que no tuviese mordidas en el caparazón o las patas, de que sus ojitos estuviesen sanos, procedí a devolverla al mismo sitio, agradeciendo a la naturaleza estos pequeños tesoros que puedo encontrar en mi solar.
