Liverpool FC has been very brilliant in the 2021/2022 season, and in all competitions. So far, they have won the EFL (Carabao) cup. This trophy they got after defeating Chelsea FC in the finals. Also, they are strong contenders in the EPL title race; only one point adrift the current league leaders, Manchester City. Still to add is that Liverpool FC is still competing strongly in the UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup competitions.
This begs the question of the chances and capability of Liverpool FC winning a treble in this current football season. Is it possible for them to win? Can they win? Do they have the quality? I think it is possible but might not be an easy task. Closely, we'll analyze their chances of winning the other competitions to ascertain the possibility of their treble-winning.
What is a Treble in Football?
Trebel? That sounds like a part of music, right? But no, it's a different thing in football. Well, for those who do not know about trebles and what it stands for, you are covered.
In the simplest terms, treble means triple and it is used to describe a scenario where a football club wins 3 trophies in one season.
But that's not all, you don't just win any 3 trophies and call it a treble. For it to be a worthy treble, a football club must win the right trophies.
That takes us to the types of football trebles that exist. We have the domestic treble and continental treble.
As the name implies, a domestic treble entails winning 3 domestic trophies in one season. Therefore, a domestic treble comprises the league, the main national cup, and the secondary national cup.
Using England as an example, a club is said to have won a domestic treble when such club wins the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup (League Cup) in one season. By implication, winning two out of these three is not considered a treble. Also, the Community Shield trophy is not counted when considering an England domestic treble because it is a one-off tie.
More so, in some country football, a domestic treble doesn't exist because there are just one or two major tournaments or competitions. Such countries include Spain and Germany.
Continental Treble
On the other hand, a continental treble involves winning the club's national league competition, main national cup competition, and main continental trophy.
We see that the continental treble is very similar to the domestic treble, but as the name indicates, it inherently involves a continental title. The major continental title is the UEFA Champions League. However, a second-tier continental tournament like the Europa League is permissible when applying the tag, but it comes with an asterisk for several fans.
Mainly, a football team is said to have won a continental treble if they win their domestic league, their main national cup competition, and the main continental competition. Still using England for an example, a club is said to have won a continental treble if they lift the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League (or the Europa League).
Winning a treble isn't a very common thing in the football world, especially the continental treble. Over the years, only a handful of football clubs have been able to win either of the two football trebles.
Noteworthy is that only five men's clubs have won the continental treble two or more times and they include: Al Ahly SC of Egypt, Auckland City FC of New Zealand, FC Barcelona of Spain, FC Bayern Munich of Germany, and Cruz Azul of Mexico. Similarly, only 21 men's clubs have been able to win the domestic treble.
Can Liverpool Win A Treble?
A very tough question to answer as you can always predict the future. That notwithstanding, anything is possible for a team that is formidable, balanced, and consistent. Liverpool has shown their brilliance in all competitions this season and the fighting and trophy-winning spirit can be seen in their team psychology and mindset.
As it stands, they are still competing in all competitions and they have already taken one national trophy. Therefore, they are qualified to be considered as treble candidates this season. For a domestic treble, they need to win the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Speaking of the Premier League race, they are currently one point (69) behind the leaders, Manchester City (70) with 9 matches left. If they can win all their remaining games then it is possible to win the league but that will be dependent on Manchester City. If City wins all of their remaining games then it will be bad business for the Reds.
In the FA Cup competition, they are still contenders but alongside Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton, etc. At the time of writing, their next FA Cup game is against Nottingham Forest. Then in the UEFA Champions League, they have made it to the round-of-16 stage.
If they can win the Champions League, the EPL, and FA Cup then a treble is inevitable. On the whole, we can't predict what happens in the next 2 or 3 months? But I hope Liverpool wins as many trophies as possible.
