When September begins.

Whenever September 1st rolls around, as it has today, I think about the 1939 invasion of Poland, when the Nazis began their destruction of European Jewry. Two thirds of all Jews in Europe were killed during the Holocaust, including some of my relatives.

"Never Again!" is more than a slogan. It must be a commitment. And while that saying was originally formulated with regards to Jews – that Jews must never again be targeted for extermination – the phrase has also been used as a rallying cry on behalf of peoples around the world who have been ruthlessly assaulted, even mass murdered.

Today I also think about Ukraine. And I keep hoping that the nations of the world will not allow Poland's fate 83 years ago to become Ukraine's fate in the coming months.
