Quite rightly many pregnant women these days avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine but they do not think twice about drinking herbal teas. If this sounds like you sister then listen up!! So the question is, can you drink herbal teas in pregnancy?
Herbal teas can indeed be harmful to you, especially if you drink far too much herbal of the stuff. I’d just like to point out that most of the ingredients in herbal teas are extremely safe and actually good for you, but some are not so good. Herbs are in the main drugs and thus can be as strong as some medications on the market today.
Which Herbal Teas Are Safe To Have During Your Pregnancy?
Although there are no known U.S. regulations specifically addressing the herbal tea debate, most of the herbs the Food and Drug Administration considers and believe to be safe for food use are presumed safe as well for teas.
As an example, teas made from hibiscus, lime blossom, peppermint, oolong, barley, rose hips, dandelion etc are more than probably safe to drink on an occasional basis. But, and as with all things nice to have, moderation is required and indeed prudent when you are pregnant, drinking excessive amounts of herbal teas or any type of tea for thaht matter could cause you health problems for you and your unborn child. Benefits of hibiscus tea is reduced the body temprature.
What About Herbal Teas That Are Specifically Aimed For Pregnant Women?
Herbal Teas In Pregnancy as per the above paragraph, I would err on the side of extreme caution when it comes to the herbal teas aimed for pregnant women. As you have no doubt seen for yourselves when looking on supermarket shelves, the makers of these teas promote their products as a healthy option for pregnant moms. As far as I am aware, no studies have been done to support these manufacturers claims. So please, be careful what you drink. It’s just my opinion but I would not do it.
So, Is There A Safe Herbal Tea?
If you must have your herbal tea, check the labels and packaging for any unfamiliar ingredients. You have to be sure that you can identify and are aware of all its ingredients. Go to a specialist tea/coffee store who will know doubt have a wider knowledge of products that they stock and their ingredients there in. You cannot beat the experience of a specialist retailer.
