An interesting third-person action game comes to PC and PS2 in the hands of Rebellion. Get into the shoes of a genetically created blue soldier who is seeking revenge for his squad's betrayal, and discover the secrets of an intense war on the planet Nu Earth ...
Wars are a constant in the evolution of the human being, being always present in the key moments of our history. Despite the voices against and the protests of organizations and ordinary people, surely they will continue to be very alive in the future. And as Paul Verhoeven's visionary Starship Troopers tells us, the battles of the future will take new directions according to new technologies.
This is the starting point that Rebellion offers us in the title that concerns us. A futuristic war where genetic engineering plays an important role on the part of the warring factions. However, far from offering the moral burden that would be expected, we are facing a fairly entertaining direct action game that allows you to enjoy an interesting game on the net.
Rogue Trooper is based on a comic book of the 2000 AD saga, where they saw the light of works better known as Judge Dredd. Nevertheless, it was a slight failure that did not manage to overcome the flight in spite of the attempts of resurrection by means of several scriptwriters and sketchers. The inconsistent scripts were the main stick to a work that left a good handful of charismatic characters that now come back in the form of a game.
Rogue Trooper is set in the planet of Nu Earth, where an endless war is facing the North and the South. A platoon of genetically engineered soldiers (of a striking blue color) is involved in the war, with the idea in mind that they were born for that moment. However, shortly after their landing, they discover that they have fully entered into a trap, and that they are just another objective.
We will put ourselves in the skin of Rogue, the only survivor of the squad of genetic soldiers. However, you will not be alone, as you will use the digitized personalities of your fallen colleagues on your team. Thus, Gunner will live in our weapon, Helm in our helmet and Bagman in our backpack (some significant names), and the three will be dedicated to help us to finish our revenge and to survive.
Despite the fact that Rogue has a wide range of movements, there is none really new or that stands out in a special way, since practically all of them have already been seen in other titles, especially in FPS's (Peferct Dark Zero or Halo) and third-person adventure games (HeadHunter, Metal Gear). In spite of everything, they are not forced and fit properly to the title, oriented to this second genre.
In this way, we can shoot, walk, rotate the camera or jump forward as basic movements. Apart, we can climb to higher ground, or cover edges, debris or any element that serves as a hedge, where we can target our rivals and shoot them without suffering greater dangers in our lives.
As a genetically created creature, we will have a recovery factor, so our energy bar will recover on its own by being inactive for a while. However, this will not always happen, and there will be injuries that, to cure them, we will have to resort to first aid kits. These, as well as the ammunition, grenades and improvements for the character should be purchased in the menu for that purpose, Bagman.
A detail to emphasize is the possibility of using diverse heavy armament that is scattered by the scenes, generally after finishing with the enemies that were using it previously. In this way, rocket launchers, antiaircraft, heavy machine guns and other weapons will be at our disposal throughout the phases of the story mode. The downside is that they will not be optional, but it will be mandatory to use them in order to move forward.
Rogue Trooper contains a strong multiplayer aspect, allowing the possibility to enjoy with up to three other partners of the online game. It can also be played via LAN or in the same console with another player in split screen. The battle scenarios, cooperatively, faithfully follow the designs of the game maps, but are created exclusively for these modes.
Visually, Rogue Trooper cheats. A priori, it shows solid scenarios and well-modeled characters, with interesting designs. However, as we advance in the game, we will enjoy repetitive, flat and unlike scenarios and soldiers and enemy machines that repeat quite often. Luckily, the graphic strength of the characters remains.
The effects of light are quite simple, and the game moves a lot between shadows, so removing a couple of explosions, little else offers Rogue Trooper, and for that they are repeated intensively. In short, graphically adjusted, without exploiting the hardware available, despite having striking details that give the impression that could have given more of itself the title.
In the sound section, decent melodies and credible sound effects, which fulfill their role with ease. Especially highlights the dubbing work carried out in this title, since it is one of the best of recent times, with a quite successful visual synchronism and actors who get quite well in the role of the characters.
The game is quite playable, with varied movements but quite simple to make, and with the constant reminder of what we can do in each situation, so getting control is relatively simple. In spite of everything, it lacks an own identity when copying many ideas of other titles, and it does not get to stand out at any moment by the repetition and scarce variety of the scenes.
In addition, the twelve missions of the game are frankly linear, with few options at the time of taking alternative ways or to end enemies of varied or more original forms. Its short duration is solved, to a certain extent, with the game in network and for several users, although with few game options that leave the product feeling unfinished in many occasions.
Both deliveries are identical in all aspects, saving the logical changes of control, but in broad strokes they are practically the same.
conclusion
Rogue Trooper is an entertaining game, simple but that manages to fulfill its mission with direct action and without complications. The strong linearity of the title plays against you from the point of view of freedom of adventure, but it will help those who seek to enter a game without major complications. Technically correct, but nothing flashy, and with a duration not excessively long, Rogue Trooper is in many aspects that can be improved, but it does not stop being interesting, especially because of the option to play in a network. Thus, the life of the game lengthens considerably, and hours of fun take on new heights. Every user, before getting hold of it, should make sure that it offers what it is looking for. - Simple control system - Good coverage and sniper modes - Offline cooperative game,
