Let's get rid of PlayerUnknown's Battleground and its clones because for now Fortnite is the game everybody is talking about. Thanks to sites like YouTube and in particular Twitch, Fortnite has become the most popular game on the planet. It makes the question raise, what has Fortnite that other games lack ?
Familiar Game Elements
The rules in Fornite are pretty simple, 100 online players find themselves on a Island where they have to battle each otherwith everything they can get their hands on. The last man standing wins the tournament, this battle royale element looks very familiar. Indeed the developers of Fortnite have sneak peaked at a previous sensation of the 3th person shoot'em ups namely PlayerUnknown's Battleground. According to insiders Fortnite was originally intended to be a completely other kind of game, but after seeing PUB's success designers at Epic Games and People Can Fly incorporated some game elements from PUB into it.
The Fortnite Twist
Trying to survive on an Island with 99 players who are ready to hunt you down isn't easy when you have nothing at hand to begin with. Weapons, munition and health kits can be found in chests that spawn randomly around the map the minute you hit the drop zone. What makes Fortnite so different from other battle royale games is the option to gather raw materials like wood or stone. Those raw materials are used to build walls, small bunkers or even an entire house to seek shelter from enemy fire. Graphically the game looks rather cartoonish in comparison to the shoot'em up games of today, but that's fine as it adds more charm in a way. The combination of battle royale meets sandbox building in a cartoon setting works hand in hand which is why Fornite stands out from similar titles.
Mobile and Free
Due to its huge popularity Epic Games and People Can Fly have announced the release of Fornite for smartphones. The game will have exactly the same features as the original, the same map, skins, avatar customization everything ! Iphone users can already sign up with Apple to get Fortnite on their mobile devices. Android owners will have to wait a little bit longer than their iPhone counterparts. With Fortnite free to play was a great incentive for newbies to step into the game and it's no different with the mobile version. Some small fees will be charged for huge extras other than that the game is going to be entirely free.
