A taste of sweet tradition and my donut recipe

I don’t know if there’s a person who doesn’t like donuts! The donuts originate from Greece and Rome, they were made in the form of strips served with honey.

After that, in the Middle Ages, they were served as unsweetened balls, with sugar syrup.

As for their appearance, the former donuts did not have a hole in the middle as they do today, although we can find donuts with the former look in stores, I kept the old tradition according to my grandmother's recipe and made homemade donuts without a hole in the middle.

To make donuts look like they used to, this treat takes time and patience to get a real donut, round and empty inside.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 500 ml of water
  • 1 yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • half a tablespoon of salt
  • flour as needed
  • donut baking oil

PREPARATION:

In a large bowl, add yeast, a spoonful of sugar, heat the water to be lukewarm, then add it to the already prepared ingredients of yeast and sugar.

So leave a little for the yeast to rise.
When the yeast rises, add half a tablespoon of salt and eggs and mix everything well.

Then, if necessary, add flour so that the dough does not stick to the wooden spoon.
When we can no longer mix with a spoon, because the dough will be thicker, sprinkle a little flour on the work surface and process a little more dough to get a smooth ball of dough. Which we will cover with a clean cloth and leave for 30 minutes to rise.

When the dough has risen, roll out the dough with a rolling pin, coat it with water, then wrap it all four sides inwards and leave the dough to rest for another 15 minutes.
Repeat this procedure two more times, you will get a soft dough from which the donuts will grow, and the middle will be empty.

When the dough has stood, spread the dough and take out the circles with a suitable glass.

Put the oil to heat well, and then fry the donuts in hot oil.

When the donuts have grown and got a golden color, take them out in a large bowl and leave if they have drawn a little more oil during baking to drain the excess oil, then serve them warm with ground sugar or various jams.

Delicious donuts according to the old recipe, are not like modern ones because they do not have a hole in the middle, but this is how they used to be prepared.
