During my last trip 2 weeks back, while I was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I went to Jalan Alor. Below are the Food stalls photos taken on some of the delicious food offerings there.
This stall sells fresh seafood and various items like Frog legs, sausages wrapped with bacon,and mushroom on a stick, Bean curd skin wrapped with vegetables and meat also on a stick, cuttlefish on a stick, Prawns on stick, just all mushrooms on stick, chicken meat on stick, pork on stick, fish balls on stick and many other items placed stick. Now why are all these placed on the sticks and not loose. For one thing it is easy for the seller to count and need not worried about packing if these are loose. These sticks of meat, vegetables or whatever on these sticks are cooked and dipped inside sauces. But bigger and more expensive items like big lobster, scallops, huge prawns are charged differently. Anyway because of their big sizes, impossible to place the stick through them.
A closed up photo of the Scallop, noticed that there is a red rubber band tied to close the scallop. It cost RGT30.00 each verses the other food on the stick which is RGT10.00 only.
These frog legs are priced at RGT25.00 each and I am of the opinion that it is reasonably priced. Imagine the work involved in cleaning and preparing these frog legs. I have tasted them, and it tasted like chicken meat. No big fuss about them as it is common for people to eat Frog Legs porridge or Frog Legs stirred fried with Ginger strips and Spring Onions.
This next photo shows the rest of the food from this stall. There are plenty of choices for the customers to choose and most will end up selecting more than what they can eat. Very clever sales tactics to get more sales. The vast amount of food, makes their stall stands out. There were these 2 ladies ( Japanese tourists ) in front of us that ordered more than RGT350.00 worth of food from this stall. They kept picking up sticks and sticks of food, plus scallops, lobster, and huge prawns onto their plate for the stall owner to count and cook for them. I guess these food must be pretty expensive back in Japan and they are finding these prices so cheap. Or maybe they are buying for a big party of friends. Imagine this is from only 1 stall, I am sure they will be getting other food from other stalls. There are Vietnamese food, Thai Food, Malaysian Food, Indian Food, Chinese and others.
This is a closed up of the huge prawns and they are huge, not sure if they are sweet or soft. I have the perception that big lobsters and prawns are tougher and not so tender like the smaller ones. Maybe it is because I cannot afford huge lobsters and prawns and I am telling myself there is no big lost not having them if they are tough and not tender.
