Ownership has been something users have taken for granted and it seems like less things are being 'owned' whereas licenses are being distributed in their place. Physical stores are limiting or no longer selling physical DVDs and Music CDs, instead offering a digital license from their digital store/market. Licenses do not declare ownership over an object but permit use of something or access to it.
Licenses can be revoked, expire, or not be valid by the issuer at any time, place, or for any reason they deem 'fit'. It's quite a hit when 'My' digital library has some titles missing from the collection for reasons I have to figure out.
Even on digital platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook(Meta), Twitter(X), or Medium, there are no guarantees that my creations on there will remain 'mine' as the company can decide to delete them at anytime for any reason. Complete deletions have happened before to long running communities, profiles, postings, and other creations for absolutely no reason. I've heard multiple stories of peoples entire catalogue being deleted with no reason given. Their digital livelihoods were entirely on one of these platforms and just deleted without a reason given. The account was still there but all of the creations and postings were wiped completely from the feeds.
I never trusted 3rd party platforms after that because what was the true point of spending time creating if it could be demolished at any point by a random entity within the company for absolutely no reason?
---Halfway Point!---
We've come full circle from the early days of blogging/vlogging/podcasts to current times to now. Having a space(Personal website, Blockchain, ETC) to call ones own is becoming more important. Owned/purchased holdings and Websites need to have a place the online residents call 'Home', not on a platform. 'Home' should be where everything(Creations, Assets, purchases, ETC,) are under complete authority of the owner and is difficult for any other entity to dispute.
I am claiming ownership by trying out a method of having as many points for creations that show myself as the origin as possible(Web3, Personal Blog,), before I post it on a platform(Medium). That way I have copies and proof that I am the original source.
The goal and mission for residents online now should be to have ownership or control over what is 'theirs'. 'Ownership' is quietly being contested on many fronts and it is an issue that needs to be seen, sorted, and figured out by as many as possible before the meaning of the word changes and the options available are limited.
---What's the reasoning behind this post?---
Realization that physical stores and companies are leaning more towards handing out licenses instead of tangible items that can be held and used in anyway the holder sees fit, that platforms and corporations have been deleting their users creations for ages but are now selling user posts, creations, and data to A.I. Companies without any consent, and just to reinforce the idea that the need for a personal digital 'home' to protect anyone's digital creations is imperative in making sure it is safe from deletion and control from other entities.
I feel 'Ownership' should be fought and protected on any space and that the originality behind the creation has a right to the creator as long as there is proper authority over it.
I wanted to also give others some ideas on how to take control.
