Did The Whiskey Write The Songs (Original)

I wanted to try to write a more traditional country song, different from the pop country type songs that pass for country music these days. I didn’t plan on dropping so many names, it just came out that way.

DID WHISKEY WRITE THE SONG

Listening to Hank Williams, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”,
I started thinking about the legends,
How legends live and legends die,
And I closed my eyes and wondered, As I began to sing along,
Did the words come from the heart,
Or did the whiskey write the song,

When Hank Jr. fell off that mountain, he was lucky just to be alive,
But with songs like “Family Tradition” and “A Country Boy Can Survive“,
He stands among the legends, right where he belonged,
Were they a product of his DNA,
Or did the whiskey write the song,

Did whiskey write a lot of songs we hear the legends play,
Did they just uncork the bottle, pour a shot and get out of the way,
They might have started with a simple phrase,
Or maybe one lone note,
But by the time the bottle’s empty,
They had a song that whiskey wrote,

Skynyrd is a classic almost everyone has heard,
Ronnie was a genius with the written word,
Just listen to “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Was I Right Or Wrong”,
And tell me did he live it, or did whiskey write the song,

Waylon liked the cocaine, Johnny Cash liked the pills,
Willie’s been know for smoking’ weed,
And he probably always will,
George Jones and Merle Haggard, they were all country strong,
So in the end what does it matter if the whiskey wrote the song,

Did whiskey write a lot of songs we hear the legends play,
Did they just uncork the bottle, pour a shot and get out of the way,
It might have started with a simple phrase,
Or maybe one lone note,
But by the time the bottle’s empty,
They had a song that whiskey wrote,
By the time the bottle’s empty, they had a song that whiskey wrote.
