DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Its got to stop.
Domestic violence is the act of meting out abuse and violence on a spouse or family member. It is a contemptible and dastardly way of resolving issues in the family.
Though there are laws put in place in Nigeria to curb the act, it is still a very prevalent practice. And every year, it becomes more widespread and shows no signs of lessening. In fact many people die and violence is meted out by loved ones on a daily basis in different parts of the country. And 90% of those who face this violent act are women and children.
Domestic violence takes many forms including physical, sexual, emotional, and mental. Also known as spousal abuse or gender violence and abuse is on the rise mostly because it is often not reported or punished. Take the case of a child who takes things that are not his for example, if not corrected and thought the dangers of doing such a thing, he/she might continue thinking it was the right thing to do. So, when a woman is abused and she doesn't report it, either because she feels its the man's right to redress his issue in such a violent manner, it leaves the perpetrator of the act feeling it is his right to do so.
A few years back there was a case of a man who killed his wife and pictures of her dead body was splashed in the media for all to witnes, but what was most disturbing was some people's support of the husband's act even women. Some said she must have aggravated him or cheated on him. Well we have got to stop thinking like that, no matter how angry a man is, there is no recourse for meting out violence on his spouse or children. It has got to stop!
Even if you the woman has no care for yourself, think about your children and their future. Think about how witnessing or been exposed to such violence affects them, their mental and emotional health. Think about how harmful it is to expose them to such an environment.
Today it's a black eye, tomorrow might be your dead body!
