It is a classic symbol of both saluting the sun, and indicating peaceful intention towards those in your presence. The "Hitler" salute was directly derived from the ancient Roman salute. The origins of the Roman salute lay in the custom of two warriors raising their sword arms on meeting in order to demonstrate that they were not holding a weapon. In time it became a sign of respect, and later carried over to a sign of respect and protection. The protection aspect took on the symbolism of a blessing in religious communities.
