Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, makes a soothing bath soak for sore muscles. If you'd like to enjoy the benefits of such a soak without getting all wet, or just need a way to reduce stress, take a few minutes and bathe your feet in an Epsom salt soak. An Epsom salt foot bath also makes a great start to a home spa day or a stay-at-home vacation. According to the online magazine Care2, you can even use an Epsom salt soak to help draw out splinters in your feet.
Things You'll Need
Measuring cup
Warm water
Pan or wide bowl
Paper towels or dry, clean rag

Step 1
Place the pan or wide bowl, which should be large enough to soak both feet in, near a comfortable spot for you to sit. At the foot of a sofa or comfortable chair is the ideal sort of location, or underneath the kitchen table so you can eat, read a book or do paperwork while your feet soak.
Step 2
Transfer warm water into the pan or bowl with a measuring cup. Keep track of how many cups you pour into the pan, and stop filling once the water is as deep as you like.
Step 3
Dry the measuring cup out with paper towels or a dry, clean rag. Measure 1/8 cup Epsom salt into the soak water per each cup of soak water.
Step 4
Soak your feet for as long as desired. If the soak water goes cold but you'd like to continue soaking, carefully add piping hot water to the soak water a cup at a time. Stir with a spatula or other utensil until the soak temperature is back to your liking. Add in 1/8 cup Epsom salt for each cup of hot water you add to bring the soak solution back up to the proper concentration.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep in mind that the water level will rise when you put your feet in the pan; you may need to periodically stick both feet in the pan as you fill it to check where the final water level ends up.
- According to the manufacturer, Epsom salts should not be used as a soak on areas with redness, irritation, swelling or infection. Furthermore, diabetics are cautioned not to use hot or warm soaks unless so advised by their physician.
