Homemade Scented Oils

Fragrance oils allow you to take strong, concentrated essential oils and dilute them for everyday use in perfumes, scented massage oils, lotions and other projects. Fragrance oils are commonly used in a practice called "aromatherapy," which is the use of fragrances to elicit a therapeutic response, either by treating a chronic condition or stimulating a state of well-being. Essential oils on their own are so concentrated that it is easy to overuse them if you don't first dilute them.

Things You'll Need

  • Carrier oil
  • Essential oils
  • Dropper
  • Dark glass container with lid Funnel

Step 1

Choose a carrier oil depending on the purpose of your fragrance mixture. For perfume and skin oils, choose an oil that is nourishing for your skin, like jojoba oil or sweet almond oil. Use a high-temperature-safe oil, like grapeseed oil, for scented oils that will be used in burners and warmers. Avoid strong-smelling oils like olive oil because their scent can overpower your scented oil.

Step 2

Choose essential oils to add to your mixture. Essential oils have many properties that may be beneficial to your purpose. Choose them based solely on their scents, or see the Resources section for a list of essential oils and their healing properties.

Step 3

Choose a 1-oz. dark glass container in which to store your scented oil. Dark glass containers will not add a plastic scent to your fragrance oil and will also preserve the integrity of your oil.

Step 4

Use a funnel to fill your container until the oil reaches 1 inch from the top of the container. Use a dropper to add 30 drops of essential oils to your bottle. This can be one oil type or a combination of several types. Combine essential oils until you achieve a fragrance you like.

Step 5

Don't shake the bottle, but gently rock it back and forth to mix the essential oils with the carrier oils so that everything is combined.

Step 6

Store your oil blend in a dark, cool place. The longer your oil sits, the more intense the scent will become.

Tips and Warnings

  • Essential oils are generally regarded as the highest-quality oils; however, if you prefer, you can use concentrated fragrance oils in place of essential oils. Concentrated fragrance oils are less expensive than essential oils but lack the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
