The Nine Noble Virtues (NNV) are distilled from the cultural traditions of Northern Europe and Britain. The 9 Noble Virtues are;
1: Courage
2: Truth
3: Honour
4: Fidelity
5: Discipline
6: Hospitality
7: Self Reliance
8: Industriousness
9: Perseverance
In my own opinion, one does not need to hold any specific religious belief to see the benefit in living these virtues. These are common moral standards which every positive culture and belief system exalts in some form or tradition. Our lives are very different now than they were hundreds and thousands of years ago, but virtue isn't effected by time or place. In my own experience, every time my thoughts and actions stray from the path mapped out by the NNV there are negative consequences which must be paid sooner or later. Every time I have acted and thought in accordance with the NNV, no matter how uncomfortable the moment may be, my life has benefited in the long term.
Courage: Simply stated, this is the ability act in accordance with one's morals while facing adversity and Fear. While in comfort and with no consequence, it is easy to know what is right and what is wrong. In the moment when Fear tries to control the mind, this is a much harder feat to accomplish.
Truth: Refusing to accept Truth leads to the growth of internal shadow. This diffuses and corrupts the Soul's desired expression from something pure to something colored by Ego. Without Truth, people cannot properly share the experience of life with others.
Honour: Acting in accordance with the NNV brings honour to the individual and his/her immediate CIrcles of Frith. In past cultures this was known and the distinction and separateness between individuals of a family were much different than current Western Culture.
Fidelity: Loyalty to those you are close with is of utmost importance. A person without the trust of his relatives and friends is doomed to lead a shallow fulfilling life.
Discipline: Without a disciplined mind and actions whatever work one goes about will be incomplete and imperfect. The Disciplined Mind truly has no limits if trained properly.
Hospitality: The act of giving comfort, conversation, and accommodation to others when needed. Being a generous host and courteous guest lead to positive and beneficial relationships.
Self-Reliance: No one person can live and work in a bubble sheltered from the outside world. That being said, the more a person knows and is able to do the better they will be in life. The closer inside one's CIrcles of Frith all life's needs can be met the better.
Industriousness: This can be thought of as the polar opposite of Sloth as expressed in the 7 Deadly Sins. While hard work is a powerful trait, this virtue also requires the use of imagination and ingenuity and leads to the creation of new and beneficial ideas and tools. Always keep you mind open to new ideas.
Perseverance: When you have set a goal, DON'T GIVE UP. The Higher Genius in everyone routinely gives inspiration and vision of amazing ideas. If a person does not have the endurance and Perseverance to bring those ideas into reality they are only ideas and of no use to the greater world.
While Christian thought and morality has dominated the Western mind for hundreds of years, these virtues are still recognized by nearly all as positive and powerful ideas through which one's moral compass can be calibrated. The ability to integrate these ideas fully into one's world view and mindset are important steps towards perfecting one's Individual and Family Culture.
