BAT is a type of cryptocurrency that is making some serious headway.
The main selling point is that it wants you to use their browser (Brave) and by doing so it can pay you for browsing and viewing ads as well as creating content and being tipped.
Which is nice but not as original as you may think. I personally knew of a startup called Ourdata which pushed the idea pretty heavily that we're being ripped off as consumers. There's a reason why the internet is almost entirely powered by advertisements. There's a lot of money involved and yet we don't see any of it. Our data is valuable and it's being sold, all the time. Ourdata tried to pay us what we're actually owed - hence the name.
It failed. Disappearing suddenly into obscurity and nobody talks about it anymore. But Brave is basically the same thing but with added features. Ourdata was just an adblocker, but Brave is a whole browser.
There's talk of Opera at the moment trying to get in on this action and they may beat Brave to the punch, who knows.
But for now, here's a link to sign up and collect some free BAT cryptocurrency to start you off.
