Turning The Tables On The Riddler

From 2014, I am taking a look at the one-shot "Detective Comics: Futures End" #1, which exploded on the comic book shelves in a big way during the month of September. All issues related to "The New 52: Futures End" had storylines that took place five years in the future. Brian Buccellato wrote this hostage story, while Scott Hepburn, Cliff Richards and Fabrizio Fiorentino handled the artwork on different pages of this issue. All three artists displayed great teamwork as you couldn't distinguish where one ended and the other began. Yet, various styles were displayed throughout the issue.

Batman needs a way to get in to Arkham Island to free the hostages that Calendar Man is holding. Calendar Man's wife is dead and he wants the man responsible. The one holdback is that the Riddler is the one responsible for making the island a fortress to hold the prisoners. After the Gotham City Police Department weren't able to get the Riddler to cooperate, Batman had to go and convince Edward Nygma to get him inside.

What the Riddler didn't realize was that he was the one that Calendar Man was blaming for tearing apart his family. His wife died during the blackout that was orchestrated by Edward Nygma, the Riddler himself. This was a clever way for the "caped crusader" to get the Riddler to turn himself over to Calendar Man. This series not only provided exceptional graphic work, but gave the writers a chance to really get creative with the superheroes of the DC Universe.
