Let's go back to 2012, as we discuss the one-shot Avengers Sampler #1, whose story is continued, by the way. Brian Michael Bendis wrote this very easy read. The comedy among the heroes, especially the dialogue from Iron Man and Spider-Man, reminds me of the current movies. While the artwork from John Romita, Jr., Dean White and Klaus Janson seemed at times simplistic, it was very stylish.
Captain Steve Rogers, now referred to as the Top Cop of the World by Presidential standards, has assembled a team of heroes with various talents to protect the world from all of its evilness. Wonder Man believes that the last thing the world needs is another Avengers. His reasoning is because he blames the Avengers for the Super Hero Civil War, the Mutant Decimation, the Skrull Invasion and Norman Osborn. Included in Rogers' group is Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America (the Bucky version), Wolverine, Spider-Woman and Thor. As Iron Man continues his bickering with Steve Rogers, Rogers informs him that Maria Hill has been picked to lead the team.
They are also waiting for one more hero to show up but instead receive a visit from Kang the Conqueror. Coming from the future, Kang is armed with a Doomsday Device that Tony Stark supposedly developed in the days ahead. Without a Time Machine, Kang wants the Avengers to help him subdue their off springs who are creating chaos with power after destroying Ultron. Not knowing what to make of this claim, the Avengers are trying to work things out to solve this problem. If they can't, the Doomsday Device will be activated to ensure the future doesn't happen! However, there is one Avenger that is not present that Kang appears to be working with and it doesn't look like it is going to bode well for our heroes.
