My church is doing a capital campaign (CC). This means that they want you to give above and beyond what you usually tithe. Anyway, like 5 years ago they did a CC and we accidentally signed up to DOUBLE TITHE. At the time we were tithing decent and it hurt every month for 3 years to give double. We ended up with a nice new basement and classrooms and kitchen and stuff for the school also.
Now they want a crap-ton of money to ENTIRELY RE-DO the inside of the church so we are all pretty and can keep up with the other churches in the area. I agree we need a new roof to the tune of $240K but a $50K baptismal font? A $100K “glass art of the Risen Christ behind altar”???
I’m all for improvements and fixing things, but we are not a church full of rich people. Why are we trying to act like it? We can’t even afford a vacation and have improvements to do on our own home, which is exactly as old as the church, and we are supposed to come up with all this money?
Did I mention we are also half a million in debt? (the church, not me)
It feels like we’re running our churches like the government is running the country of the USA.
