The Battle Between The Prophets

Jeremiah 28:10-11 (KJV)
Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck, and brake it.
And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

This chapter plays out almost like a contest between the two prophets. Jeremiah, called of God even before his birth, had followed the Lord’s instructions and placed a yoke upon himself to represent the yoke of bondage Judah would face under Babylon. In the presence of a crowd, Hananiah, a prophet’s son, presumed to countermand Jeremiah’s message. He pronounced the yoke would only last two years. Jeremiah publicly acknowledged his desire to see Hananiah’s message come true but affirmed it would not.

At this point, the contest escalated. Hananiah physically removed the yoke from Jeremiah and broke it. It was no longer a battle of words. Jeremiah, realizing the nature of the situation went his way.

But the contest was not over.

At a later time, and having received further revelation from the Lord, Jeremiah re-engaged Hananiah but privately. He rebuked him for being a false prophet and pronounced he would die that year. The chapter ends by simply announcing,
Jeremiah 28:17 (KJV)
So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Having been the son of a prophet gave Hananiah no authority to speak as a prophet. It certainly gave him no right to teach rebellion against the Lord.
