Many times we say we love God but we don't really mean it from our heart.
Yes we say it loud and clear but if we really check ourselves especially from our actions, we would discover that we don't really love Him as we claim.
I'm not trying to say you lie when you say you love God, No!
What I'm saying is that when it comes to the issue of loving God, many of us proclaim the "noun" rather than act out the "verb".
Most times we only just religiously follow the band without even deciphering what loving God entails.
Let me break it down a bit more.
You see, many of us say we love God without really acting it out. Some of us find it easy to love only when things are rosy.
We are quick to proclaim love when the going is good and all seem to be well.
But is love meant solely for confessing and not for professing? Is love meant solely for the good and not the bad times?
Would we slide back when the going becomes tough and withdraw our love at the very time it should weigh the most?
An obvious NO!
If we love God because of what what we can get from Him alone, then our love is facade.
Love built on the basis of what one stands to gain is selfish and cosmetic.
True Love isn't just for the good times but for all times. Job loved God when it was rosy and when it was not.
True Love isn't just about what we can gain but what we can give.
True Love isn't just for confessing but for professing as well. God didn't just speak out His live for the world, He acted it out by giving His only begotten Son Jesus
Little children, we should love not in word, nor in tongue, but in action and in truth. 1John 3:18
What Loving God Entails
Now, what does it really mean to say we love God? How do we prove that we love God? What does Living God entail?
- Loving God Entails Obeying Him.
If we claim to truly love God, we will obey Him. You can't claim to love a person who you constantly disobey.
If you love me, keep my commands. John 14:15
- Loving God Entails Trusting Him.
If we truly love God we will trust Him. Distrust does not signify love. You don't doubt someone you claim to truly love.
Trust is a compulsory companion of love. They are so conjointly fitted together that an attempt to separate them may lead to the death of the other.
Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: Job 13:15
- Loving God Entails Serving Him.
Service to God thrives greatly on the platform of love. It's true that when, as a male, you love a female counterpart you can serve her to any length.
Simply put, you don't struggle with serving God and the interests of His kingdom when you are truly in love with Him.
Passion brings the best out of us in rendering service.
You wouldn't need to be begged, coerced or encouraged in service when you are in love.
Encouragement for tireless perpetual service just comes naturally on the platform of love.
So if you have to be coerced to serve God, check it; you may not truly be in love with Him.
- Loving God Entails Loving What He loves.
No one can claim to truly love God who does not love what He loves.
God loves the souls of men and so a God-lover must be a soul-lover.
God-lovers don't watch while souls perish. Oftentimes, they register as soul-winners.
God loves righteousness, equity, justice and forgiveness so an acclaimed God-lover must love the same things too.
- Loving God Entails Loving His House
If you truly love a man, you will love His house. There's a saying in Yoruba which goes thus :
"Ile eni t'afe kii jina" meaning "the house of a loved one can't be too far".
King David, a man certified by God Himself to truly love Him, has this to say.
How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!
Psalms 84:1
- Loving God Entails Giving To Him And The Course of His Kingdom.
It is possible to give and not love but it's impossible to truly love and not give. True love freely gives.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
- Loving God Entails Loving Humanity.
We can't truly claim to love God without loving humanity.
Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 1 John 4:20
