Sometimes when I play chess (like I am bored on a plane or something) I wonder what would happen if chess were not hierarchical like it is now. Sure, all's cool if hierarchy is voluntary, blah blah blah... Still...

Interestingly, while I have been looking into founding a local chess club and while looking into 3-D chess, I have found out that there are multi-party chess sets. See below.
