So those of us in the Blockchain community know that Blockchain itself is not perfect. While I still Blockchain will take over in the future, there are some cons that follow it. One problem is due to the complexity and the encrypted nature of blockchain, their transactions can take a while to process compared to if someone was paying with a card or cash. Off-chain computations can speed up the processes but cannot always be trusted by the blockchain. Thus here comes the solution Cartesi brings to the table.
Cartesi
Cartesi is a Linux infrastructure for scalable DAPPS. Cartesi acknowledges that intensive computations are impractical inside the blockchain. Why? Well because of three reasons:
- Slow
- Restrictive
- Expensive
So the solution is to have intensive computations performed off-chain instead of being internalized. Cartesi offers a Linux (preferable for developers everywhere) run time environment for DAPPS. This allows for complex computations to run off-chain while having security, this fixing the security issue that was earlier mentioned. Developers (including me) can use powerful tools supported by Linux to create DApps. This is a BIG deal because now developers can build apps with the stack that they have always been using (such as me using MERN) instead of having to conform to some other stack. This can be used for all sorts of ideas such as:
Software
- Leading to lower-cost AI
- Outsourced experts and bots will take up hard work
Gaming
- De-centralization no longer has to be sacrificed
- Developers can use the tools, libraries that can be compiled for Linux
Research
- More computing power
- Supplements such as 3D rendering and video transcoding will increase
Logistics and Optimization
- Decentralized data scientist marketplace
- Optimization tasks can be outsourced to experts
Finance
- Complex calculations can be done in a better timely manner
- Relationship between blockchains and services such as futures and insurance markets will become better
The history behind Cartesi can be found back in 2017 when its research first started. In December 2018 the first prototype arose with achieved reproducibility of computation. After released as open-source, Decentralized Tournament Infrastructure arose in Q4 2019. Cartesi's current and future plans for 2020 include the Cartesi SDK, appearing on Testnet, having the Cartest Network and Mine on Mainnet.
As a dev, Cartesi has everything I would ever want. I suggest everyone to check out Cartesi and its whitepaper.
