In comparison with the first movie, this one, picks up the speed of the plot. Ther is still a lot of slow epic space scenes but not even close to first one. What is obvious with this one is that it was on a tight budget. There is a lot of recycled footage from the first one.

Acting is getting better there are even almost real emotions shown.

I find costumes to be funny. They strike me as unpractical in comparison with ones from the first movie. Especially officers uniform with that overlapping, fold me down to show the withe thingy bit, it looks to me really unpractical even cumbersome to wear. First movie uniforms were slick and practical, as the clothes for space voyage should be.

The naval etiquette is a little bit overboard for me. All that whistling, aye siring, and "permission to board the ship" stuff is too much. It is a 23rd-century spaceship and not the 17th-century sailship! I'm quite sure that there would be some evolution in that during 6 centuries.

The demonstration of Genesis project capabilities is first ever fully computer rendered scene featured in a movie. It was made by a division of Lucasfilm that later become Pixar.

All in all, I find this one better than the first one!
