Some of us know that quite many area or city names appear in brands around the world. At least in the western countries we see a lot of "American" or "New York" -brands or product names. You can have "New York"-products which are not related to New York in any way but people see this as ok. At least outside of New York and America.
I'm not going in depth with madness of "Greek cheese" which is made in the US or "American bacon" made in Poland.
Today I'm talking about something far more boring.
Vaasa bakery and Helsinki mill
Finland is a small country. We are a small nation and the distances are long. The distance keeps us sane, as we dislike people and if we all would live in a small community, all of us would go crazy. CRAZY.
We have two companies I'm going to discuss about. One of them is loosely translated into Vaasa Bakery. They are not baking any bread in Vaasa. They are baking bread in several bakeries in Finland AND ESTONIA.
Vaasa bakery is baking bread in Tallinn, Estonia, but not in Vaasa, Finland.
Lucky for Vaasa, Vaasa has other companies around.. like Helsinki Mills. Helsinki Mills does not have a mill in Helsinki.. well they have one in another small city/town a bit off from Helsinki, but still not in Helsinki. Luckily they have one mill in Vaasa and another in a small town near Vaasa.
So if citizens of Vaasa want to support local products, they should not buy Vaasa bakery products but instead Helsinki mills products.
You can't trust anything nowadays, not even your own assumptions
I used to work in a supermarket for years. When customer talked about how they want to buy Finnish bread instead of foreign bread, it was always a joy to tell them "Hey.. didn't you know they are making that bread in Tallinn, not in Finland?" and people were surprised.
They didn't even read the package information which stated the bread is baked in Tallinn. They just assumed they knew. Assumptions are a danger as we don't know and care to check them.
