I've been thinking of late about social media and what I've been wanting to get out of it with regards all of this. I started my Instagram account about a year ago to try and gain some knowledge and inspiration. I don't doubt I got much of the latter but the inspiration was always meant to take back seat to the knowledge and in this regard, Instagram has failed me.
I don't know if it was my expectation of how people would use Instagram that was at fault or if people just don't know how to make Instagram work that is. In either case, I'm getting less happy about how I'm using Instagram. The inspiration is great but I'm not able to tell my story well using this platform so I'm calling it a day for a while while I regroup.
This website will now become my platform to tell my story and try and help others which has always been my goal. I don't feel that a picture speaks a thousand words in Instagram's case and so this site will allow me to have a mix of words and pictures to try and draw people in. I may or I may not succeed but I just don't get the interaction I once did with Insta and feel that I'm directing my blows so as to hit the wind with this platform so I am calling it.
I have various other means of getting the information I feel I need and that's most likely from your own websites rather than your social media profiles so I look forward to interacting in a more formal setting.
So in that respect, this website is going to be my home. Everything I do will be here except for videos. This way I can control the narrative, I can explain myself better, and I can control who sees what. Sure I might take a hit with followers but that's not what I'm aiming for. I'm aiming for interaction, not likes. Likes don't teach me and likes don't bring me closer to my goals.
In this regard, Facebook is going to change as well. I already rarely use it but I've got some groups I hang out in which has some useful information in so that's Facebook. Twitter is really just going to be there for self-promotion. I haven't decided whether or not I'll use Vimeo or YouTube for my videos but YouTube is kind of the platform I feel my audience will be on so I'm leaning that way with my videos being republished on D-Tube for Steem purposes. Linked In is a waste of time. Pinterest thinks I like Band Club for some odd reason so that's useless as well.
All in all, we'll have to see how it pans out but it seems odd that having the big social platforms telling us they're the ones that will fill our needs my needs seem better filled with systems that I was using 10 years ago before they all started taking over the world. What goes around comes around I suppose, like vinyl, flares, cassettes...
