Jesus the Child, the Man

Easter Sunday and April Fools Day

After reading some of the Nag Hammadi Scriptures I'm convinced as never before that Jesus had a sense of humor.

The Gospel of Judas - The Life of Jesus (33:6-21)

When he appeared on the earth, he performed signs and great wonders for the salvation of humankind. Some (walked) on the path of justice, but others stumbled in their mistakes, and so the twelve disciples were called. He began to discuss with them the mysteries that transcend the world and what will happen at the end. Many a time he does not appear as himself to his disciples, but you find him as a child among them.

So it seems to me that Jesus enjoyed being a child,
and who enjoys pranks more than children?

When I was a child my older sister played an April Fools' Joke on me. Prior to supper she asked she said I look sick and I should stick out my tongue. The dumb blonde I was--I did. My sister had her pointy finger dabbed with hot, hot sauce and swabbed my tongue. (I screamed)

It wasn't too many days after that my mother baked a banana cream pie complete with meringue and placed it on the windowsill to cool. The next day, my older sister argued about the last piece of pie and grabbed it. She quickly gasped when she discovered a tiny screw in the pie, realizing it had fallen from the windowsill into the last piece. The entire family panicked for a bit and then we all laughed. I couldn't help but giggle remembering the hot sauce.

I don't recall having Easter Sunday and April Fools Day together. What I recall as a child was having a mother who always wanted her girls dressed up - and going to church was an Easter Parade. She ordered dress patterns and worked for days preparing us to go to church and then relatives. We didn't have much, but our widowed mother enjoyed making her girls look pretty.

I'm not sure there are any Easter Parades as when I was a kid - or if anyone ever wears an Easter Bonnet, but the memories are there for me to share. And while this is an important day for Christians, my sense of humor is always near. So have a fun day - and contemplate who Jesus was, and who Jesus is.
